Requesting Extra Orientation?

I've been working in a long term care facility for 6 months now.

Is it wrong for me to ask for another orientation shift for a shift that I've never worked before? This shift is new to the unit i'm working on (12pm-8pm) and i already had 3 orientation shifts (7am-3pm, 3pm-11pm, 4pm-8pm) plus 1 extra that I asked for (3pm to 11pm). Is it wrong for me to turn down shifts due to not having orientation? Sometimes i will be asked to work shifts that i've never been oriented for on units that i've never been oriented on.

Since you have been working at that facility for 6 months they will probably tell you "No" in regards to getting any "extra orientation" because of working different shifts. You will be expected to work different shifts without orientation. They will assume that a kind hearted nurse who works whatever shift you are working will steer you in the right direction and will tell you what you need to do on that shift.

Yeah, I don't think most places would accommodate you on this one, especially since this is the overnight shift. We often have nurses pick up a different shift. If they come in 15 minutes early, they really can be "trained" on the night shift. The facility layout is the same, the residents are the same...there will just be a few different tasks that you may need to perform.
