Relocating to St. Pete

I just accepted an offer to participate in the new graduate nurse residency program with Versant at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL. I am so excited to have an opportunity to work in the NICU as a new graduate.

Down to the nitty gritty. I am wondering if any locals in the Tampa/St. Pete area could give me some advice regarding relocation, avg rental prices, activities.

I have a few friends and some family in Tampa but no one is living in S.t Petersburg. I know there is a lot of stuff for families to do but I am enjoying the single life right now. I am under the impression that it would be fun to live in "downtown" St Pete. Tomorrow I head back to the hospital to finish up paperwork and am going to see if they have any housing assistance / information for relocating employees.

So, any advice? Good/bad apartments? Condos or backyard cottages for rent? Better to commute from Tampa Bay or live close? I would love to hear from anyone who lives in the area.

Downtown is very nice. I'm not sure about rental properties but they have gone up the last few years.

I live in St. Pete and I absolutely love it. I am currently pre-nurisng, but my dream job is the GN program at all children's when I complete my BSN!

As far as living, I would check out old NE. It is just north of Downtown St. Pete, and has very cute cottages and homes that have been broken up into apartments for rent. Avergae rents for apartments are $450-$750 month, depending on the size, from a small studio to a large 1 bedroom. And, the best part is you could walk or bike to work. Another nice area is called crescent lake. If you check craigslist, you will see tons of options. St. Pete is a great place to be single. Good Luck!

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I found a place to live very close to All Children's Hospital and am loving my job in the NICU right now. I was initially a little apprehensive but have become more and more convinced that this is the best place for me right now. Colleagues are great as well.
