Relating to Community Service Projects

Published

Hi, I'm a Community Service chair in my community college's newly formed Nursing club. We are trying to get into some community services to give back to our community and also get our club better known.

We already are planning to sponsor a blood drive on our campus and are going to public schools around our community to speak with junior high schools and high schools about the nursing occupation. But I was wondering if anyone can give me some ideas on events that they had held.

By the way, my community college is in Los Angeles.

Thank you.

Relay for Life, Health Fairs (nursing students would do BP tests; nutrition students would do nutrition; etc.) Events that I have put on outside of nursing but still relatable was called cookies and condoms. Basically it is an informational session presented to the student body about sexual awareness, STI's, safety, rape, etc. it's quite popular, whether its due to the cookies, info, or free condoms - I have no idea.

As for a community service side, you can collect donations and give them to inner-city schools. On top of that provide information to those kids such as oral hygiene (can ask dentists to donate toothbrushes etc), nutrition and exercise (ask perhaps the YMCA or other gyms for donations), etc. Benefit dinners are also a great way to give back to the community or a certain organization.

Not exactly sure if this is the kind of info you were looking for but hopefully it is useful!

We did a lot of work with St Jude Radiothon, March of Dimes, Donation drives for certain programs(battered women, child advocacy centers, etc), umm really a lot of things I can't think of off hand, but we do a lot with the community. (Oh yea and the Angel Tree program is a good one around Christmas).

We did a lot of work with NAMI. Got students together for the annual NAMI walk, got donations. We had a bra and underwear drive for a local shelter that houses abused women, which went over pretty well. We volunteered at health fairs, did food drives for food pantries, etc. The possibilities are really pretty endless!
