Recommendations for RN to BSN program in south florida

Updated:   Published

Hi,

I'm looking into the RN to BSN programs in south florida. I just graduated from a school in Ga with an ASN and have a BS in a field outside healthcare. I may move to Fl to be with family so I'm looking into schools there. I'm trying to decide if it makes more sense to get the BSN or just get the MSN. But I'd like to learn more about any schools that offer the RN-BSN and how difficult it is to get in, if there are online programs, and experience others have had. I have a 3.8 GPA. Ultimately I'm very interested in nutrition, preventative and holistic medicine.

Thanks - I appreciate any thoughts!!

in south florida, you have FAU which offers an online and in person RN-BSN as well as RN-MSN in person. FAU has campuses in broward county. and it's a state school.

and you have FIU in miami-dade county, where they have online RN-BSN, and they have RN-MSN if you have a bachelors in something else plus your ASN.

FAU= florida atlantic university

FIU= florida international university.

I'm from miami so I am chose FIU for the convenience because it is just 20min away from my home, if I need anything-- like go to the bookstore to buy books, or use the library... it's right there.

I don't go often, I got smart and bought my books online!! and I had to attend campus once for a physical assessment exam for one of my classes.

FIU has 3 excelsior college exams--- of maternal/peds, psych, med-surg >-- which FAU does not have.

which makes FIU cheaper because the tests are cheaper than attending a class.

oh it's not hard to get into these state schools because they are state schools, so once you attend a community college, or state college they HAVE to take you into their RN-BSN program. and according to FIU, they said that the RN-BSN is not competetive, they just have to have space for you in the class. I signed up for my first semester the friday before classes started! so you shouldn't have a problem getting in if you attended a state school for your ASN.

Thank you - I will look into those schools!

I'm not sure if this is going to help, but the first thing my friend told me is that you should ask someone from a local university. She is a nursing professor and she would recommend you go to a career counselor. They would know best.

Or you can look up the pre-reqs required for the local university that you want to attend to online.

I don't know if all the other schools are like this, but at FIU, I could not make an appointment with a career counselor without being a student there first.

So what I did was, just look up the pre-reqs that I needed, and fortunately, I had followed all the classes needed when I completed my AA- because I knew that in the future I would go to FIU for the RN-BSN program-- then I went to nursing school, got my AS.

Then I took a year off, and then decided to apply to the RN-BSN program, and I got in right away without any problems.

The best option for anyone out there, that wants to do a BSN, is to go to the desired school website, look at the pre-requisites, then apply to the school, then of course, get your transcripts evaluated and see if you have or have not anything missing, then start the program.

FIU required an information session before applying to the school. so I did that as well. after I applied to the school as a student.

I got my student ID number, then applied to the RN-BSN program.

Does anyone know if its hard to get into rn bsn program at Miami Dade college?

USF is definitely one I would look into as well--I've heard nothing but fabulous things about their nursing programs, and I believe the RN-BS is all online.

FAU has a program for RN to BSN that takes a holistic approach. I would look into that as well.

They have an amazing philosophy of teaching.

from their site...Our BS Program has been endorsed by the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation, Inc. (AHNCC), facilitating our graduates' certification as holistic nurses. Our holistic program features designated space where classes in yoga, tai chi, mindfulness meditation, aromatherapy and other modalities convene.

What about Broward college and Nova Rn to BSN programs. I choose Broward College then transfer to FAU for MSN/NP

good luck!
