quick question

hi everyone... one quick question...if you get your asn..2 year community college rn degree and pass the liscensing in california..then immediately move to new york..do you have to take the ny test??? the reason is.... in about 2 years i will be moving from cali to ny..and i am wondering... is it better to pass the liscening here first..or just take the liscensing in new york after i graduate?? thanks so much xox jenn

Unless something has changed dramatically that I don't know about, all 50 states have reciprocity on nursing licenses, which means that, if you passed the NCLEX and have a valid license in one state (and have a clean practice/disciplinary record!) any other state will issue you a license. They will, of course, charge you a BIG FEE for doing this! :chuckle

The way it usually works is that you apply to the new state for licensure. Many states will issue a temporary license almost immediately and you can start practicing while they do a background check and get around to finally issuing you a permanent license.

Keep in mind that you are responsible for abiding by the rules/regulations governing nursing practice in whatever state you are licensed and practicing in. Sometimes there are significant differences between how nursing is practiced from state to state. The times that I have applied for a license in another state, the "new" state BON automatically sent me a copy of that state's Nurse Practice Act so that I could familiarize myself with what might be different than what I'm used to.

I'm guessing it would be much simpler to get licensed in CA after you graduate and then apply for a NY license, as compared to registering to take the NCLEX in NY when you went to school in a different state ...

thank you so much for that info!!! i really appreciate it.... so you have moved around a bit huh??? did you by any chance start school in one state and transfer schools before you were finished?? since we may move sooner than 2 years, i am worried some of the classes wont be transferrable..since almost every dang school has different requirements..so i was wondering ify ou had to do that too? thanks again xox jenn

Hi there,

I'm a Navy wife, so I definitely have done my share of moving LOL!

I actually attended 5 different colleges in 3 different states before graduating from a nursing program. It definitely is doable, BUT do your research. Keep your course catalogs in case you need to prove your case that a class should be transferable.

I moved 10 days after I graduated from a program in California. My college had to fill out some paperwork certifying that I graduated, etc. and they sent it to Wisconsin for me. I sat for boards in Wisconsin, while living in Illinois. I'm now licensed in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Good luck!:D

hi usa... can i ask how different are the boards in different states as compared to california?? are there additional books or readings you should do..or are the tests pretty universal?? xox jenn
