I have been reading the boards and wonder of the travelers

1) Do you have continuous work?

2) Savings amount?

3) Contracts being cancelled? Yikers! Im giving up full time job.

4) As a general rule are you accepted by the staff?

5) Orientation?

6) Process after recruiter says Im going to submit this. Im being submitted for

and 8 week must start ASAP.

Im very nervous to be giving up a full time job to start traveling. This has been

a dream of mine since before I was nursing. Not doing it for the $big money$.

I am also just starting out traveling so I don't have a lot of info to offer. Just wanted to say that I just gave up a full-time position as well to start this. I am the sole bread-winner in my household and it was very scary. I am, however, staying PRN at my current facility in the event that this doesn't work out for me, I will still have my foot in the door. Good luck to you!

Thank you. Did you have any money in savings? What did you do to prepare for this?

You absolutely MUST have money in savings before starting out as a traveler. Have enough to cover multiple months of your regular expenses and bills - some will say 6 months, some will say more.

Remember that contracts can be cancelled before or during the contract, you may have a gap between contracts or have a situation with a major car repair or such while on the road. It may not happen for months, years or ever but you must be prepared for this.

Attitudes among the staff can vary widely but most places are decent and others are tolerable because you know it is temporary.

Orientation is generally minimal, usual I've found is 1-2 days, the first being administrative stuff, computer training, etc. and the next on the floor. It can be as little as "Here are the supplies, here's your password and here are your patients". Occasionally longer - which can be a real bore when you've heard the same stuff 10-15 times before!

"Comuter training" - ha! Get to work on time!

"Comuter training" - ha! Get to work on time!

Oops!

Though totally off topic you'll have to admit we all know some nurses who could seriously use "commuter training"!
