Questions about Pre-Requisites

Published

Hello all,

I am very new to the nursing world so please bear with me. I graduated from college 6 years ago with a degree in film so I will be starting from the ground up. I would love to do an accelerated BSN once I get my prerequisites out of the way, but I want to make sure I'm doing all that I can to make applying for nursing school as easy as possible (when the time finally comes). I live in Brooklyn and work 9 to 5 Monday thru Friday in Manhattan. My questions are:

  • Which school do you recommend for someone completing pre-reqs while having to work?
  • Do most of them offer evening/weekend classes?
  • Do nursing schools care more about GPA or the competitiveness of the school? (For example, does a 3.8 GPA at an "easy" school count more/less than a 3.0 GPA at a competitive school?)
  • Do the nursing schools with accelerated BSNs (Downstate, NYU, Pace) all require the same number of pre-requisite credits in each course?

I will probably have many follow-up questions but I think this is it for now.

Thanks in advance!

  • Which school do you recommend for someone completing pre-reqs while having to work?

If I were in your position, working full time, I would just go to a CUNY community college to finish up the pre-reqs. However, research the different schools you want to go to so you will get an idea of what pre-reqs you will need to take

  • Do most of them offer evening/weekend classes?

Yes, alot of colleges offer day, evening, and weekend general education classes

  • Do nursing schools care more about GPA or the competitiveness of the school? (For example, does a 3.8 GPA at an "easy" school count more/less than a 3.0 GPA at a competitive school?)

Honestly, I have no idea...I have never heard of this

  • Do the nursing schools with accelerated BSNs (Downstate, NYU, Pace) all require the same number of pre-requisite credits in each course?

I would defintely check out their websites or visit the schools to find out what the pre-req requirement of each school is. Not every school has the same pre- req requirement

Hi pigmachine,

Your best bet is to take your prereqs at a community college it's way cheaper and most schools offer weekend/day/evening classes.

Do nursing schools care more about GPA or the competitiveness of the school? (For example, does a 3.8 GPA at an "easy" school count more/less than a 3.0 GPA at a competitive school?)

Most schools take a look at your prereq gpa if you attain a C+ in all your preqs & the next guy comes in with a A's. They will take him over you no matter what school he attended. I don't think there is a "Havard" when it comes to preqs. Just try to aim as high as possible as it will solidify your chances of getting in. At this moment it's gotten pretty competive to get into a school and most schools desire a high gpa at the very least you have to have a 3.0 in the preqs, that is.

Do the nursing schools with accelerated BSNs (Downstate, NYU, Pace) all require the same number of pre-requisite credits in each course?

No, each school has different requirements, check out thir website for me info.

This is from my own experience:

* Which school do you recommend for someone completing pre-reqs while having to work?

I currently attend BMCC. I ma done with mu pre-rec's but since I am a part time in order to apply to the program I have to finish A&PII and micro. I ma done A&PII so I am doing Micro in January.

* Do most of them offer evening/weekend classes?

BMCC does offer evening classes. However, many schools canceled their evening programs.

* Do nursing schools care more about GPA or the competitiveness of the school? (For example, does a 3.8 GPA at an "easy" school count more/less than a 3.0 GPA at a competitive school?)

For BMCC You have to have high GPA. The lowest you can get is A,A,A and a B+. But, this does not mean that you will get in, you will be considered to get in.

* Do the nursing schools with accelerated BSNs (Downstate, NYU, Pace) all require the same number of pre-requisite credits in each course?

Not sure about this, but I do not think so. It could be different.

Good luck!
