question about withdrawing???

Nursing Students General Students

i am currently taking the prerequisities to get into nursing school...i'm an older student going back to school. I signed up for A&P1 over the summer and was doing well in the class, but withdrew to take the class during the year, so that I could learn more of the material. aka...the material over the summer is super fast, more time to study during regular semester.

Anway, I did that and got an A in A&P1. However, I signed up for A&P2, chem, and microbiology, developmental psych this semester. I have way too many classes and thus am going to withdraw from my microbiology class and take it next semester. My advisor said that as long as I get A's in all my classes and an A when I take micro, that the 2 W's shouldn't kill me. What do y'all think?

do any of you guys have a W on your transcript?

"W's" are NOT factored into the GPA in any form, way or fashion.

I have never seen a college that held W's against a student. I have W's on my record and not once has anyone said anything about it.

It doesn't equal failing...however, your advisor should never have let you signed up for Micro and A&P during the same semester, especially if you were taking other classes.

Yes I did. I withdrew from Gen. Chem the first time, because the instructor was a real bas*$*#, but I went ahead and re-took the class and still go into the nursing program

Thanks for the replies. Y'all have made me feel better. I guess I was just worried because I would hae 2 W's on my transcript. And the W's are for science classes.

The guy I have for A&P, also had me over the summer. And he knows I didn't withdraw because I was doing bad. So if I get a letter of rec from him, I could always ask him to say that I didn't withdraw because I was doing bad.

Have a good weekend everyone!!

has anyone here had two W's on their transcript? when you applied to nursing school, did you still get in?

I wouldn't worry about it. W's just mean you had a problem giving a class your best, usually due to outside factors and you were conscious of it and took a proactive step to remedy the situation.Kind of like critical thinking, I only have one W on my record, but it didn't stop me, I got in on my first try. They only look at the grade you got when you finally completed the class.:nurse:

Yes, some colleges/programs can potentially hold excessive withdrawals against you (especially in the core science pre-reqs) and those programs that use points systems as the basis of their admission criteria usually do as well (e.g. they can deduct points from your total if you had to take a pre-req again due to a W.)

The best thing you can do to confirm the answer to your question is receive information in writing from the colleges/programs you plan to apply to in the future regarding how they interpret course withdrawals. Policies vary everywhere.

is there anyone here who has two W's on their transcript...if so, what classes?

i'm just freaking out. i didn't withdraw because i was doing bad, i actually was doing well in both of the classes. one was over the summer and i wanted to actually learn the material, and the other i had too many classes. do y'all think my good grades will out weigh the W's?

thanks in advance,

I had 4 W's on my transcript when I applied. The classes I had W's in were A&P I, A&P II, Problem Solving Math, and Chemistry. They didn't effect my acceptance at all. They weren't F's and that's all that mattered. The fact is, they don't know why you have W's. And W doesn't mean you couldn't handle the class. Maybe you just took on too much or maybe you had a family or health issue. They don't know. And to my understanding, they really don't care. They care about the grades that count. If you drop a pre-req and get a W but then you take it later and get an A in it, they shouldn't care.

I wouldn't worry about getting a W at all.

I can imagine how overwhelming it is to have all those science classes together. You have to do what you think is best for your acceptance into nursing school. The committee that analyzes those transcripts are different for every school. I had a W for Chem 1, and a F for Psych because I was sick to do the final and never made up the I that was on my transcript. I took Psych and got an A. I applied and I was accepted. Therefore, it depends on the school and how strict they are about their grades. I think the GPA is factored in higher though. Good luck!

Graduated about 10 years ago with a BS in biology...had a D and F and a couple of W's all in science and math classes (lower division). Still managed a 3.2 GPA and was recently accepted to an accelerated BSN program without even having completed my prerequisites. Everyone's background and situation is different. I had 10 years of work experience in the pharmaceutical industry and matured a bit since my undergrad. The program I'm in required an essay, an english/math skills test and GPA. I'd say don't worry too much about the W's...the grade you get in the class after completion is the most important thing.

At NCC in NY they do hold W's against you
