question about threads

Question: What do the envelopes on the side of the threads mean? the blue and red ones. why are some of them locked? i am new and i know i ran into it before but i have been searching for the answer and cant find it. thanks for your help :)

Threads are closed for various reasons: general announcement by Admin/Mod team without response needed; closed for moderators discussion re thread content as concerns violating our Terms of Service; closed at request of OP (original poster); topic debated to death and keeping it open serves no useful purpose; redirected to another thread with more info ---main reasons I can think off right now.
