I was interested in school nursing. I have always liked Pediatrics and the thought of school nursing kind of crossed my mind. I was just wondering if there are any male school nurses or would a school even hire a male nurse. It would be nice to spend weekends and evenings with my family. My experience is emergency room and med/surg.

i was wondering if school nurses are required to have bsn or can they be adn? i hope to have my rn in 2006 but hope to eventually get into school nursing. any info is appreciated. thanks!

I think it might depend on the state. I am a LPN school nurse, working in the state of FL.

There are school nurse journals and websites, but I do not have that info. I just wanted to say, apply for the job of your choice and assume they are looking for a qualified nurse, like you. I know one school nurse. She is paid thru the state like a teacher and gets benefits same as the teachers. The pay is less than what acute care nurses are paid, but she prefers the job. Also, in the summer you can sign up as camp nurse and get to travel all over the place. Good luck.

the recommended level of education by the national organization is bsn. however, the actual minimum requirements differ from state to state. in california it is the msn. it used to be msn in mass, but i am not sure if it was changed back to bsn.
