I have no idea where to post this.

I learned in school that it was illegal to cut unscored pills, that RX had to do it. Does anyone know about this and where I can find info on it.

Thanks

Never heard of such a thing.:lol2:

If a pill is unscored, it usually isnt meant to be cut. Your best bet would be to call the pharmacy and ask if that medication can be cut in half and/or crushed.

Extended release tablets are an example of pills that are not scored- you cant cut them because it could alter the way the medication is released, which isnt good expecially if its a once a day pill- you dont want to give the person the dose all at once, but gradually throughout the day.

Hope that helps explain things.

My problem has been lately is that I need to give 3mg so we give 2mg and split one. Sometimes RX does not have 2mg so they send 4mg and want us to give 3mg from that which would mean cutting one of the halves in two. Even with a pill cutter it is not accurate.

Is there another route, like IV, where the correct dosage might be available?
