Question for all nurses. How long would you recommend staying at a job before leaving. I've been a new nurse since october at a LTC and I'm already getting sick of the job. I'm dragging my feet to go to work each day. Around the clock pushing med cart, doing dressing changes, dealing with GNA's that don't want to work, but want to get paid, resident problems, and the list goes on.I don't exactly know if I need a change in environment or a change in career. I just don't feel fulfilled. I don't know how long I'm gonna last:o

Leave if you're unhappy. You're not doing anyone a favor by arriving daily to a workplace which you dislike, only to perform the same old duties you dislike, with coworkers whom you dislike. You appear to be caught in the nursing home vortex.
However, be assured you have another job lined up before you resign from your current gig. In addition, be cognizant that the grass might not always be greener at another place of employment. You might encounter the same old issues. Good luck to you.

I agree, if you are unhappy it is time to find another job. Don't give up on nursing all together!! I was in LTC for 18 years and finally got burnt out. I am now in home health and wouldn't trade it for anything!! I LOVE my job and that is what matters!! Find a different specialty that will make you happy!! Good luck!
Thanks for your reply. I REALLY don't want to give up on nursing all together, but it's just the work and hardache that comes with it that's making me sick. I've even contemplated on starting a new career altogether just to keep from being burned out. I know I'm new to this nursing thing, but I don't want to be like some nurses who are just miserable and are there just because they need to pay bills. So I think your right, I just have to find my nitch. How is psych nursing like? It's something that I've been thinking about. Also, how's home health?
