Question for Current OCC ADN Students

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

Hi everyone!

I was recently accepted to the Fall 2010 ADN program at Oakland Community College. I will be taking the "traditional path" as opposed to the accelerated.

What I wanted to ask is if a current student could shed some light for me on how the program begins. I know the class schedule as far as what courses we take and when, I just wondered when campus lab and hospital clinicals start? What is a typical week like at the beginning of the program?

In all honesty, I would appreciate any information about anyone's actual experience in the program. Also, for those of you who have kids, were you able to find a comfortable balance (My husband and I have a two and a half year old and will have a newborn when I start the program; Hubby is a RN who will take paternity leave for 3 months come September)? We are lucky to have a great support network in each other and amongst our friends and family; I'm sure this will prove very important for my success! :redbeathe

Thanks for any and all time and information! Have a great weekend, everyone!

I am in my 1st yr. I can't remember exactly how the schedule began..... 1 day of theory, 2 days of lab to start. In lab u have lots of quizzes and check-offs (you perform your skills in front of faculty, like taking blood pressures, ect). After you have some lab time under your belt (maybe about 1 month), then clinicals begin.... so then you have 2 days of clinicals, 1 day of lab and 1 day of theory. It's stressful! You are going to have to realize that while you are in school some things might get neglected (house work, ect). Good luck!

Thank you so much for the information. I know it is impossible to properly "prepare" for all the changes the program will bring, but it is nice to have a little extra information from someone who has been there.

Thanks for taking the time to write me back! Good luck with the rest of your program!

:) Hello to all of the current OCC ADN students. I would like to know if the program requires you to have a PDA/Itouch or are you allowed to use one?

Thanks!

I am a first year student J You start out going to lecture 1 day per week and lab 2 days per week. I think we started the extended care clinical in October and then moved on to the acute care clinical in November. You also have to go to an APA lecture and a library orientation in September – each are just one 2 or 3 hour time slot.

I would say the biggest things I have neglected are tidying up the house and cooking dinner…we have take out/go out to eat WAY too often these days…but I just don’t have time! In addition to school, I work 20 hours a week.

The most important thing is keeping on top of due dates and studying – if you do that you will be fine! If you have any more specific questions, let me know, I am happy to help!

it is not required, but you are allowed to use it.

Logigue,

I just got accepted this year and had a few questions if you don't mind me asking. Like you I will be working 20 hours a week and I hear so many horror stories on how the program takes up so much time that you will not have a life outside of nursing. Is there anything that I can do now to prep for the program or anything you wish you knew when you started the program? Are there any other orientations besides the library one. Any type of advice or information will be totally helpful and appreciated.
