Nursing Students for the 2010-2011 school year...SOUND OFF!
Hi everyone and congratulations! I am attending Oakland Community College, starting beginning of September (though we already have online modules and assignments due before we even have our first class!). I got into Nursing specifically for Labor & Delivery Nursing, but you never know where the road will take you.... Best wishes to all of you and let's kick some butt!

occ- gpa cutoff?
To jazznjac: For some reason I can not apply to your private message. I'd be happy to chat with you though. It's hard on this site, since I can't post my email or anything. However, if you have Facebook, I am on the O.C.C. Nursing Students page. There is a discussion at the top of the page that I have taken part in. If you want to message me that way then I will be able to answer your questions. :) -Kelly

occ- gpa cutoff?
Thanks for the congrats! I am very excited to get started. :) To answer your questions, OCC has one application deadline per year (Dec 15). That deadline is for the program that will start the following fall. They ONLY start in Fall, one time per year for traditional. Accelerated is also only started one time per year, in May. There are no multiple starts, thus no staggering. For example, you apply by Dec 15, 2010 for Fall 2011. By March 15, they inform you if you have been accepted. They then extend the offer for accelerated (if they have it... there is no guarantee and it's a year by year thing if they receive the grant from the DMC to have it). In mid-April, they contact the people who will be in the AP as well as the people who applied for it but were not above the cut-off. The AP people would start May 2011, the Traditional would start September 2011. My class of applicants was over 700. Around 220 got the traditional program and an additional 30 got the accelerated. People who did not get accepted will need to re-take classes and apply for 2011 by Dec 15th of this year. Hope that was clear enough. :) OCC is different from other schools in many ways, but it is also straight-forward: One chance per year to show up with your game face on (i.e. a killer GPA). Best of luck to you and I can recommend someone for Comp II; it is a male who has a hypenated last name. He's cool and straight-forward (I had him at Auburn Hills). I think he teaches it online as well. It sounds like you will be in awesome shape to apply come winter. -Kelly

occ- gpa cutoff?
I am also starting the traditional track in Fall 2010. OCC offers the program to everyone who qualifies for the traditional. They then take the top 30 G.P.As who wanted the accelerated and notify them. So technically, everyone who met the cutoff of 3.774 got offerred the program, though only 30 spots were even available from the 200+ accepted students. I saw the letter verifiying the accelerate program for my friend and the cutoff was 3.994. Yes, 3.994. If you are dead set on the accelerated program, I would honestly say that I am of the opinion that only 4.0s will get in next year. I know a large amount of people who are re-taking classes and applying again next year because the GPA jumped so high this time around. Like previous posters said, it will only keep getting tougher and more competetive. Best of luck to everyone! -Kelly :)

Question for Current OCC ADN Students
Thank you so much for the information. I know it is impossible to properly "prepare" for all the changes the program will bring, but it is nice to have a little extra information from someone who has been there. Thanks for taking the time to write me back! Good luck with the rest of your program!

Question for Current OCC ADN Students
Hi everyone! I was recently accepted to the Fall 2010 ADN program at Oakland Community College. I will be taking the "traditional path" as opposed to the accelerated. What I wanted to ask is if a current student could shed some light for me on how the program begins. I know the class schedule as far as what courses we take and when, I just wondered when campus lab and hospital clinicals start? What is a typical week like at the beginning of the program? In all honesty, I would appreciate any information about anyone's actual experience in the program. Also, for those of you who have kids, were you able to find a comfortable balance (My husband and I have a two and a half year old and will have a newborn when I start the program; Hubby is a RN who will take paternity leave for 3 months come September)? We are lucky to have a great support network in each other and amongst our friends and family; I'm sure this will prove very important for my success! :redbeathe Thanks for any and all time and information! Have a great weekend, everyone! -Kelly :)

OCC - 2009 applicants / 2010 ADN prospective students
Well that is strange... mine matched up exactly. I have no clue, then! I wish you the best of luck, though! And thanks to everyone who posted on this whole thread, it kept me sane while I waited and "heard" all kinds of rumors. :)

TO IfYouSeeAmy: Actually, to calculate your GPA, you have to take into account how many credits each class is. There are calculators online that you can do this with. Adding up all the grade points and dividing will get you an inaccurate GPA. This is the simple calculator I used.... http://www.college-scholarships.com/online_college_gpa_calculator.htm. Hope that helps!

OCC - 2009 applicants / 2010 ADN prospective students
Hi all! Just got my letter! I got in; my GPA was a 3.87 (I thought I had a 3.9, but I had one A- that I thought was a flat A). There is no GPA information anywhere in the letter as far as averages/cut-offs, etc. The letters were mailed from Waterford and I live in Ortonville.... not too far. If you are a little further away I would expect your letter tomorrow. They ARE offerring the accelerated program, but they cut the size down to 30 students. It also will run from May 2010 to October 2011 (I know I was told before that it would conclude in April 2011, not October). I was hoping to make the cut for it, but from all I've heard, all 30 spots are likely to be 4.0 (or very close to it) students. I just wanted to hop on here and give all the info I had ASAP. I know my stomach had been in knots for days just wondering and stressing (even though we couldn't change anything now). If you feel you are on the border and get a declination, I would call next week when they have said they will have a GPA cut-off to share with everyone. Then you can keep in mind that 30 people will get into ADN in a "second wave" once the accelerated has been chosen. Oh! And they are giving those interested in the accelerated program only until March 26th to respond. So for those of you waiting to see if you make "the second wave", I would guess you'd know by early April. I hope that helps everyone a bit! If you have any questions, let me know, though I did include everything I could think of! haha. :) BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE!!! -Kelly

Hi all! I called the Nursing Dept at HL today and was able to extricate a some information. First, the letters will probably be a few days late. They are waiting on a final decision regarding the grant for the accelerated program. This hasn't been received yet. She told me the Dean of Nursing was "waiting with baited breath" to hear back. I was also told that the last 2 years have been exactly the same; funding came through at the last minute. She told me also that if the initial acceptance letter does not include any information about the accelerated program, then that does not mean it won't be offerred. It simply means they didn't hear back in time and didn't want to delay notifying all of us any further. Second, I heard this from a prospective STUDENT, not a college employee; he claims he managed to get the cut-off GPA out of the Nursing Dept and that it was 3.61. Again, I have no clue if he is full of "you know what", but I know I always like to hear what people are saying, though I always take it with a grain of salt. I am dying to know about the accelerated program. I am nervous now because I have one stupid B from freshman Government. I hope a 3.9 will make it this time! Best of luck to all of you! Sounds like we will know by this time next week. -Kelly
