Thinking about quitting nursing school. Need advice.
I have a great support system of friends in the class. When the entire class heard the instructor continuously berate me through the hour long activity, some of my classmates got emotional on my behalf. I do not have the option to choose my clinical instructors at all. I knew some nurses eat their young but, had no clue it started this early. My only fear is that we get evaluated for our clinical performance and if the instructor who yelled at me chooses me she can say I am unsatisfactory and I fall the entire course no matter what grade I get otherwise.

Thinking about quitting nursing school. Need advice.
Hello everyone, I am currently in my foundations class and I need some advice. I just started nursing school this Sept and I have decided that I do not like the program I am in at all. I love the theory portion of my class and have aced my test. I really have a love for nursing but, I am not enjoying my clinical instruction at all. I don't feel like I am being taught in the best manner. Instruction is either reading a written checklist or having free rein in lab. Different instructors run our clinical. If you ask questions, they will help you but, depending on who I get for a graded checkoff, they tell me methods of doing certain things is wrong and I fail even though someone else said it was right. There is no consistency at all! During a presentation, one of my instructors told me I was stupid and should not be a nurse and get an education as I didn't know how to do a complex procedure that they just showed us 5 minutes prior for the via overhead announcements. Also I have been criticized for being to gentle with my partner when we practice doing things. Since when is being gentle and calm a negative thing? I don't want to quit so early but, I feel I could do better in another program. Should I tough it out or cut my losses and apply to another program where I can get my BSN instead of my ADN in the same length of time? Any thoughts would be helpful. I have wanted to be a nurse for so long and don't know what to do.

MPT at Oakland Community College
The only classes that count are your nursing prereqs. They take those grades into account for the gpa. All your other classes don't count at all. Lets says you had to take a chem, bio or math class because you didn't pass with a C in high school, those grades don't count either when they have to calculate the gpa. All you have to make sure you have are the requirements listed on the nursing checklist. Ask me any questions you want and hopefully I can help you.

MPT at Oakland Community College
Hi Joiride, I am currently a first year nursing student at OCC and the MPT test is all about percents, fractions, decimals, ratios. There is nothing related to geometry or trig on the test. The questions are multiple choice. Every single test is different but, I had a question related to percent on my test. Actually it was on both my tests(I failed the first time I took it). Just make sure you practice your problems as much as you can. Let me know if you any other questions. Good Luck

IV Calculation Problem
Hi I need help trying to figure out this dosage calculation. I have racked my brain trying to figure out how to set it up. I know I am missing something simple. Thanks The doctor orders Cardizem 5 mg/hr IVPB started now. Available to the nurse is 100 ml NS with 125 mg of Cardizem. The rate of the infusion will be how many ml/hr?

Question for Current OCC ADN Students
Logigue, I just got accepted this year and had a few questions if you don't mind me asking. Like you I will be working 20 hours a week and I hear so many horror stories on how the program takes up so much time that you will not have a life outside of nursing. Is there anything that I can do now to prep for the program or anything you wish you knew when you started the program? Are there any other orientations besides the library one. Any type of advice or information will be totally helpful and appreciated.

Anne, I got a 4.0 and applied this year. I worked extremely hard for it as well. I think eventually the gpa will be higher every year coming up. You just never know who is retaking classes or decides to pursue another career path. I just hope they have the accelerated this year so 60 more spots open up for people.

Anne, even the cutoff for the accelerated program last year was around 3.85 I think with the regular being around 3.6-3.7, so I know a 3.9 would be high enough to make it into the program.

You are welcome. I did the exact same thing as you did. I left Micro as my last pre req as I knew it would be my hardest.

Hi, Yes, you can be taking the last of your pre-reqs in the fall semester when you apply to the program. I did that myself last semester so you will be fine. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I have been going to school full time and working 20 hours a week for a about a year to finish my prereqs. Getting through prereqs was hard enough so I hope I am somewhat prepared for the nursing program. The wait is killing me though. I just want to know already.
