Question Concerning RN Course - HELP!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello my fellow pre/current nurses!

Currently I am finishing my vaccinations to prepare for my Fall 2015 application. While I am doing that, I've looked into the full class schedule for the program. One of the courses were "Care of Children and Families"(4th semester).

I already have the prerequisites for that course, so my question is - could I take the class even though I am not in the program yet? I have a free semester before the program starts so I'd like to knock out some classes, if possible.

Thanks a bunches! :D

Is it a pre-req course or a nursing course? If it is a nursing course, then no you can not take it before getting into the program.

If it is specifically classified as a nursing course, most schools would expressly disallow you from taking it until you are officially a nursing student.

It was a nursing course. It seem to allow me to add it to my schedule before I submitted it. That's why I figured I'd ask beforehand before getting in trouble.

Thank you for replying, appreciate it.

Even if you could add it to your schedule, the nursing department would remove the class from your schedule since you are not officially in the program.

Nursing courses are not stand-alone, they are based on a cumulative architecture.... fancy term that means each course prepares you for the next one. Higher level courses require skills and knowledge that you gained in the lower level ones.

Thanks for the info! Everyone here are way more helpful than the councilors I've spoken to and emailed. And quick on the replies.

something else to consider: this course probably has clinical rotations that must be done while you are enrolled in the course. Your degree program is designed to take you from a firm foundation to more critical thinking unsupervised. You would not even be ready for this course yet
