Pump rates verification

Hi All!

The pharmacy sends iv med w the rates on them to be infused at. I would like to know how can you verify that a pump rate for a IV med is correct? For example Levofloxacin 500 mg in 100 ml (NS) to be infused at 75ml/hr.

Thanks!!!

Unless I'm missing something here: you could look up the manufacturer's recommendation in whatever reference/app/drug book you use to make sure it is to be administered over 30 minutes. Them, do your old school calculation: volume (in ml) divided by time (minutes to infuse over), x 60 (because its a pump.

Im not understanding your question.. Can you explain? You program the amount to be infused in the pump with the infusion rate.. We use alaris pumps and it has a library of medications as well as strengths/volumes. You select the drug, strength and total volume to be infused or you can do a basic infusion with the information on the label (not recommended). If you question the rate, look it up and do the math yourself as PP stated.

MissRN7,

Pharmacy dictates pump rate. MD's usually don't notice cause that is what PharmD is for. The rate can be dosed r/t Creatinine clearance. If Cr/cl is a problem then PharmD will substitute Bactrim/Ds for Levaquin. There are exceptions to this I know.
