Proof of Sobriety?

Nurses Recovery

I voluntarialy relinquished my RN license 18 years ago because of depression and substance abuse. I went into the intervention program for a couple of years, but I was TERRIFIED of relapse and eventually gave up on nursing and went back to school, then years later went to seminary to become a minister. I am currently a pastor in a rural area and am very happy- married and raised my kids. The area desperately needs nurses and I have always wanted to return to nursing when I felt spiritually fit enough to attempt it. I have applied to the Board of Nursing for a temporary license to take a refresher course, and they would like proof of my sobriety. Does anyone have any experience to share regarding how to do this? How do I get a drug test or hair test? There is no program in this state as an alternative to disciplinary action as there was in my home state.

My advice would be to ask the BON what it considers "proof of sobriety." There's no point in running around accumulating documentation that won't meet their expectations/requirements.

You can go to your personal physician and request a test Of Urine (relatively inexpensive) are hair follicle (very expensive). Still these tests will only prove that you are clean not sober. You need to ask the board what they want to see as "Proof" of sobriety. Do you have records of your Intervention program? Are you currently working a 12 step program? Do you have a sponsor or sober friend who would be willing to write a character reference on your Behalf? Again you need to go back to the BON and ask them specifically what they require as proof of sobriety. In any case you will likely end up under some form of monitoring.

Peace and good luck to you!

Thank you! I called them and they said a letter from my sponsor, sponsorees, would help I can get those easily. I will ask my physician to order a UDS, but I have had 3 surgeries in the past 3 years due to broken bones (falling off a horse) and carpal tunnel release surgery, so a hair follicle teat would not be very conclusive. Thank you for your help, and if anyone can think of anything else to submit please let me know. The lady I talked to was rather vague on what proof is.
