Prolonged fever???

How high is the fever?

Personally, I would ask for the tests you mentioned.

Didn't they do any tests during the first visit?

I went through something like this when my dd was about a yr old, give or take a few months, and it turned out she was septic w/ samonella. They kept telling me it was viral. After 3-4 days, I insisted on blood work, UA, etc. and that is when they found out (by this point she was in hosp for dehydration) and was kept for over a week. Blood work was done at time of admission and that was only because dh and I closed ranks and insisted something be done.

At it's highest, the temp was 105.6. It's averaging 101-102.5. I didn't get to see our normal provider on Friday. They really didn't do much of anything. Lung sounds, looking at throat, assessing ears & abd & glands...

I will definitely be more proactive tomorrow!

How many days before you would consider a fever prolonged for a normally healthy 9 yr. old???

My dd has had one for 9 days along with persistent fatigue...went to the doc on day 5...sent home and told to come back if it persists for 3 more days. Needless to say, we are going back tomorrow. Any suggestions on what I need to advocate for??? CBC, UA, etc....or is that overkill?? Her last illness was a UTI 2 yrs. ago w/the only sx being a fever.

I'm just frustrustrated I guess...

If our docs cannot find an origin for a fever, and call it viral, they normally want to see them back in 5-7 days-just like yours did. At that time yes they usually order CBC UA. Maybe even a Rapid Strep test or Rapid Flu. Just depends on the child. So I would ask for at least a CBC.

Just an update. Wednesday morning when she woke up she still had the fever along with a classic sinus headache. He diagnosed her with bacterial sinusitis and put her on Amoxicillin. She woke up this morning (Saturday) and she's back to her old self. Thank goodness, because after 10-11 days of fatigue, fever, and not eating...I really missed her.
