nurse aides rules
I think you should write the CNA's up. As a CNA, we are not being paid for sleeping or yelling at the residents, we are there for the residents. Some CNA's like to give the new charge nurses a hard time to see if they are going to be tough enough to work there, other's....well, they are just there. They also like to see how far they can push the charge nurse until she breaks....then it's all kewl.....unless you have the ones who say she/he is a b**ch for freaking. I made the comment on another thread about being a certified butt wiper...so if you saw that here, that was me. That's what all the aides (where I work) call each other, we had an RN degrade us and always called us that....it stuck. I just wanted to say I know where the charge nurses are coming from, and they should stand their grounds....not let the CNA's walk all over them. Peace!!!! "S":D

Have you ever been hit by a patient?
As a CNA, I've been hit, pinched, kicked....ran over by the wheel chair...but the major one was getting bit while trying to bath a resident. I too ended up getting stitches and shots. Sad thing is, the family members don't want to hear about their loved one that way and the common phrase is "Not my mother, or father". They don't want to face the fact that they are confused. Yeti is right tho "The good with the bad" Peace!! "S"

Exhausted night shifter
My day light co workers say that night shift does nothing except sit around. I tell them that there is an open door policy, if they strongly feel this way, they are more then welcome to come in and see for themselves....If they come at the right time, I will make them a fresh pot of coffee...but still they don't show. We do get the crappy end of the stick. If the director orders pizza, sure there's some for us....that's been sitting there since 5pm. If one of the family members bring cake or something in and says this is for night shift, think it's there when we come in?? That's right, No. Heck, we have to go back in an hour later to pick our paychecks up. I would like to know when these people think we sleep. I am glad to see that I'm not the only one who feels this way about our shift, and how things are. Thanx for letting me vent.

Are Pa nurse still being mandated?
Overtime is diffently a problem for nurses here in PA, as I am sure in other states as well. We have a major shortage of nurses here. The facility I work for is the lowest paying nursing home in our County....and they can't figure out why we can't keep nurses. There are working us to death, 12 - 16 hours everyday.

Professional appearance
I work in a nursing home as a N.A. and we had a meeting today about uniforms. Most of the homes in this area let the nurses wear casual clothes, as long as it looks neat. We are probably the only one who doesn't yet. They let us wear color tops and all. Wouldn't you think it would make the residents feel more at home if they saw us in casual clothes. Every once in awhile we have "dress down days". Seems like those days the residents are more happier. I can understand being in a hospital, uniforms should be worn. As for the long finger nails, now come on there....aren't they afraid of poking the resident or giving them a skin tear, which I have seen done and the nurse had to cut her nails. Also we have some who come in with a face full of makeup...if I saw that coming towards me, I would run the other way. Maybe it's just my way of thinking....but the elderly aren't use to the "new wave". Of course I don't have much room to talk because I am a female nurse who shaves her head, not totally bald tho. The residents just love it, they like rubbing my head....which I don't mind...keeps them active, plus puts a smile on their face.
