51, doing prereqs and working in a hospital
I just read the post written about the 61 year-old nursing student who is doubting herself and I really want to expand on this more. I started out at a big local hospital as a chaplain intern as I've been in clergy most of my life. I'm also an opera singer with two degrees in music from the 1980's. I divorced this year and I had my two kids late - at 40 and 43. I decided I wanted steady work and I loved patient care as a chaplain so I took a CNA class, and did EKG and Phlebotomy. Two months later I landed a job as an infant hearing screener for NICU and Mother Baby at a large, well-known hospital, and after 7 months of busting my butt as a hearing screener with a busy census, the hospital offered me a full time-position as a nursing tech in their oncology unit last week. I hope to be an RN there when I'm done. I am in a SUNY college in NY near me, on my 3rd and 4th prereq and damnit I'm not quitting. I get up every morning shaking in my boots thinking what the heck am I doing. Other times I am just excited. I know how long my upcoming weeks are going to be working 8 shifts in a row what with M-F then rotating weekends, but I want this. Any comments I am so eager to know your thoughts. LOVE YOU ALL GOD BLESS YOU!!!!

NEED HELP: First Jobs and tuition reimbursement for RN
Thank you so much for responding so quickly, Ma'am. The screening company is actually not an agency, but I will be working directly for that company. The procedures on the infants will however, happen in the hospital the L&D unit. My question really was not about benefits, but more about whether you feel I will be in a better position to apply for a job through the hospital having worked on their L&D unit even if the hire came from a company who uses their facilities. Thank you again!!

Online applications: Should I go in personally to HR?
I'm a chaplain intern for almost a year at a local hospital and the whole staff knows me well. I'm now applying for nursing team positions and the charge nurse I work with told me about a spot she has, but HR told me I had to submit application online which I did, with all of the internal recommendations I had which I attached to the application. HR kind of barked at me, "you have to apply online!". Should I go in now after the online submission and say to HR - oh hi I just wanted to say hello, or will it bother them? I just don't want my application to get overlooked among the thousands they must get!!!

NEED HELP: First Jobs and tuition reimbursement for RN
I would post this in CNA but it's really about getting my RN, and thank you kindly in advance. I just got my CNA cert and I'm a PCT. I was offered an infant audiology screener job for $13/hr in a big local hospital in L&D. The question is, although I'd be working at the hospital, I'm hired by the infant screening company and I'd like to be able to move up in the hospital in a year or less. Do you think the nursing team at the hospital would still recognize my work and considering hiring me even though I wasn't exactly hired by hospital HR?

IS there a UNION for CNA/PCT's? (future LPN)
Hi All - I'm hoping to pass my CNA state boards on 1/13 and I will go on to LPN and keep going up. I'm in NY state in Westchester County and I heard from some local LPN students that they belong to a union that helps them a great deal with a lot of things. Any info would be very much appreciated!!

Why Do Nurses Quit?
You know, maybe it's an age/maturity thing. I'm 50, I've been a classical singer my whole life, a clergywoman and I've been a chaplain at a large hospital for 8 months. I'm pursuing an RN slowly and doing CNA/PCT state boards soon. At my clinicals I was excited. I love chaos and multi-tasking and challenge. I'm also divorcing with two little boys and I feel so lucky, SO privileged at the thought of being in healthcare and I'm excited in my class studies. I can't wait to be an LPN/RN or PA one day. Some of the RN's scare me where I work I admit it openly but I know that the pressure they feel is serious. Adjust your attitudes and try to keep your job. Be proactive and ask your colleagues if they will start a babysitting co-op with you. Seek another area of nursing or medicine that suits you. Do what you need to do.

Nursing school with kids and no family support HELP!
Thank you so much for responding. I do pastoral care work at a hospital who have mentioned to me that they will help place me in a job there once I pass my CNA/PCT boards which thrilled me because they do have a nursing promise program. May I ask if your CNA students are able to keep their shifts while studying? Thank you again.

Nursing school with kids and no family support HELP!
So I am 4 weeks into the CNA certification and pulling all A's. I'm 50, divorcing and have a 7 and 10 year old with no family nearby. I really am getting passionate about nursing and medicine now and I would like to pursue an RN or at the very least LPN, but I'm petrified at the thought of not holding on to my job, and all the schools tell me I won't be able to work while in school. Has anyone been in this situation and do you have advice? I haven't even started a prereq cycle because I don't know how to proceed. Thank you and blessings to all of you courageous people.

50 years old : I want to be a nurse
Thank you for your suggestions. I don't have any family support. I would need to be working at the hospital in order to get an RN paid for or any other degree. I don't think I would be able to pursue the ABSN now

I'm so sorry I didn't see your replies sooner and thank you! So, after all that, I just needed the hep B boosters and I started CNA training this week so all good - whew!

50 years old : I want to be a nurse
Nurse Beth, thank you so much for your encouragement and your response...It means the world to me. Something great happened. One of the amazing nurses at the hospital offered to help place me there when my tech course work is over and I burst into happy tears when I walked out of her office. I started my CNA course this past Monday and I've loved the whole week so far. I'm eagerly looking forward to doing EKG and Phlebotomy after passing the CNA boards and I'd like to start prereqs now for RN or ABSN if I can even think of handling an accelerated bsn with two kids. Either way I'm going for it! Thank you!

Turned down from Nurse Tech class due to Hep B antibody
I'm a professional singer/clergy/chaplain contemplating a nursing degree. A local college here in NY turned me away from applying to a tech course because I'm positive for Hep B antibody. Been positive for years no presentation of disease ever. I thought this was illegal??? I contacted the RN who runs the class she wouldn't write back to me. Thank you!
