@LiveYourDreams That is awesome news! They need to do that. It was out of date and not a good preparation for the NCLEX in my opinion. Once your closer to the NCLEX look into Mark Klimek reviews. I went to one and it was amazing! Nothing can really prepare you for the NCLEX and all I can recommend is to study as you go through the program. For example, I hated PEDS class and I did a data dumb as soon as I passed but I shouldn't have. 13% of NCLEX questions are PEDS/OB and it can be easy to forget about lochia and pelvic positioning.

I was in your shoes two years ago and now I am working as a RN, graduated from SWC and going to PLNU for the RN-to-BSN program. It all works out! Alternates do not get discouraged, in my cohort all 10 alternates got in. You will be amazed how many people cannot commit to the schedule due to other responsibilities but wont say anything until the first week of class. Just stick it out.

At SWC the amount of questions per test depends on what class you are in and what teacher you have but on the exams it is almost always 50 (worth 2pt. each) or 100 (worth 1 point each). I graduated last year but when I was attending you could fail a test, complete remediation with the study lab, and then continue on. If you failed more than 2 they would likely set you up with a tutor or have you complete mandatory study hours. 78% is passing because that is the standard for nursing. I am at PLNU now and it is the same way. My one recommendation would be to get your hand on the review material from the prior year. I know my cohort made group study guides and they helped a lot. Most professors give a review before the exams. There is no graded homework or assignments so you MUST do well on your exams. We had a few students fail out for grades or clinical issues but most of us made it. Keep in mind the classes are on the Otay Mesa campus down off the 905 so some people didn't anticipate the commute. Also, clinical is ALL OVER San Diego, so get ready. I was weekend/evening with clinical on Saturday so traffic was never too bad but during the week the day students always had issues. Some professors are more lenient than others. I have seen a professor send home a nursing student because of improper uniform and for being late. The clinical policy is super strict. You cannot miss any clinical days. That is a for sure way to get kicked out.

It does change and get more relaxed in 2nd semester but first semester you are there basically Tuesday 10-4, Wednesday is your clinical so that is a 8-12 hour day, and Thursday is your pharm class I think 10am to noon. If you want to send me a private message I can share my syllabus and anything else I have.

Day classes: school Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday all day basically Eve/Weekend: Tues: 4-7 Thurs: 1-7 Saturday (Clinical) 12 hour shfts

When I got my acceptance letter mid march last year, we had 24 hours to reply via email.

Im in the program, first year. They averaged mine but who knows maybe they changed the policy.

They average the two grades together.

You are required to include your transcripts in your application, they check them against the state database. Then the average the two grades together based on a 4.0 scale.

Its only good for one year so you will have to do it again. If you are still a student at Miramar, do it there! I honestly think the school does it just to see if you can follow instructions. There are some people who still did not have their immunizations and TB when we started and then ran into a lot of problems with going to clinical. The one other thing about SWC is that we are in a way accelerated. Of course its just an ADN program but most programs do not start clinical until 2nd or 3rd semester. At SWC you go to clinical right away, as soon as you pass testing for all of your skills. Testing is similar to CNA testing in the sense you pick 3 task cards and have 30 min. to complete them successfully. Because you go to the hospital so soon after starting the program they need all your immunization and TB info to get you placement and login information for each of the facilities you will be going to. Your first week you will start doing online training for the hospitals so that you can access charts and view orders. So in a way I see why they do it, but it is a total pain in the butt!

YES! and make sure everything is PERFECT or your application will get marked incomplete and depending on when you turn it in it may be too late to fix it if it has to do with an immunization or medical item. When you get the physical take all your paperwork and make sure in advance that your primary care doctor is willing to fill it out for you. It ends up being a lot of work because they have to transcribe all your immunization records and stamp everything and sign and make sure all the dates match up. If you can afford titer that is the way to go, 1 blood test and it will last you forever because it approves immunity acquired by immunization or expose in the past. What I did was go to the doctor on campus but the thing is you have to be a enrolled student who has paid the 19$ health services fee. The doctor comes to the campus once a week (I think Thursdays) and he will do a physical for you and the office there WILL transcribe your shot records on to the proper form and they also have experience with the nursing program so they know how to do it right. Problem is the campus is off for winter break and doesn't return until early January. Doesn't leave you much time with the deadline approaching. Also make sure your TB is 2 step or you will have a hard time. By 2 step I mean 2 back to back tests with 7 days between tests. If you work in healthcare it is the same way so if you do contact your HR or EOHD and get copies of your immunization and TB. They should require the same things as the school so it may be the best form of proof. If not I recommend getting a job in a HOSPITAL (NO SNF's or ASSISTED LIVING) as soon as possible. It will help you out so much when you are in the program. Even if you just sign up for a per diem job where you only have to work 4 days a month it will help you learn the lingo, the atmosphere, the supplies, the acronyms, everything! If you are interested in the Sharp facilities I can maybe be of some assistance, that is where I work per diem. GOOD LUCK. I just got my next semester reading calendar and schedule, OMG. I am going to be a busy girl!

I didnt but DO NOT be like me. Make sure you have options, there are positive and negatives about every program so you need to choose one that works for you. I would apply to Grossmont, City, Miracosta for ADN. They all have different application dates so just go online and figure out the deadlines. At SWC the application needs to be complete and FLAWLESS or it WILL get thrown out as "INCOMPLETE". Dont be intimidated!! You will be one of the younger students if you do get accepted. If you have flexibility when it comes to working and going to school then I would choose weekend/evening class. They will ask at orientation for you to put your preference down. If you write down weekend/evening you will most likely get it. Class for weekend/evening is Tuesday afternoons, Thursday 1-6:30, and Saturday clinicals. Day class goes to class Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Your ahead of the game, you will be fine!!!

Yea, actually as long as your are not already a bachelor degree holder SDSU offers cross enrollment. Meaning that you take the classes at SWC campus and wait for it.......each class is only 50$! There is a catch though, you can only take 1 class per semester. If you are top of your stuff and you apply and get accepted you can potentially take a class in the summer between your 1st and 2nd year and then each semester of your 2nd year. You end up getting 3 of the classes out of the way and when you graduate and transfer to SDSU it could be as short as 9 months depending on classes and availability. Downside is SDSU is soooooo expensive and there are so many BSN and even ADNtoMSN programs now that are becoming more popular and way less expensive. The good thing for us as students is that the nursing shortage is so high right now, you WILL get hired as an ADN. You do have to show proof of acceptance to a BSN program to get hired. Its really confusing but SDSU and Point Loma come and talk to you multiple times during your second semester. For example, I started in August 2016 (Fall semester) and I will graduate May 2018 (Spring semester) so about 2 years total. BUT in April or May of 2017 I will start applying to schools that offer cross-enrollment at SWC like SDSU and Point Loma Nazarene. If I do not get accepted for some reason I will start applying to ADNtoBSN or ADNtoMSN programs that start right after graduation(May 2018). Of course this is wishful thinking but just know there are ALOT of options out there. You can seriously go in so many directions! I think my points were around 75 but I will never know for sure. They dont let you see your application EVER again after it is turned in and you sign the paper. Look through all the previous posts, I break it down for someone else. Read the whole thing actually, it will give you a lot of insight into the program. Just be PREPARED. We just finished 1st semester and we ended with less than we started with, lets just say that. There is no room for error!

Yes! You have HIGH chances. Good job with your grades, that is not easy to do. I took CD135 and CD170 at Southwestern. I completed all of my courses at Southwestern actually, so I have no idea if they will transfer. I would make an appointment with a counselor soon and with a counselor on Otay Mesa campus where the nursing program is versus main campus. The counselors are more knowledge when it comes to nursing and what is and is not needed. They also have the ability to call the nursing Dean if they have any questions. You will be required to have an SEP prior to starting the program and will have to maintaining it throughout. Its done to ensure you have the credits/classes for the associates degree you will get. Its easy and it will help you prepare to get into a University for your BSN, which happens during your second year in the ADN program at SWC. You are told to begin taken classes as early as the summer following your first year.

I had 1 A, 1 B, 1 C in my sciences. I had mostly A's as well. You have a great shot! KICK BUTT on your TEAS and take it before March! They are changing to a new version and it is anticipated to be harder and include more "select all that apply" style questions. Once you get into the program you will see that "SATA" style questions are the worst. If you speak Spanish that will help you as most of the students do not and you get like 3 points if you do. Although you will get the work related points, you would not get the 25 points for having your CNA license. The reason behind this is that SWC nursing is accelerated in the sense we do not go over CNA skills, you jump right into IV's, dressing changes, Foley insertion within your first few weeks. The first 8-10 weeks of class you are learning nursing skills in classroom setting and then you will be placed in a hospital for clinical. Most schools do not even have clinical during the first semester. Your first semester will be a pharmacology and fundamentals class and your clinical 15 hours per week. You essentially go to class 3 days a week whether you are days or eves. The great news though is that it only takes 8 weeks to complete CNA class and there are many schools that offer it for a reasonable cost. You need the 25 points, believe me. The average point score of the accepted student last fall was 77. Just get the license, and look into EMT to CNA classes, maybe they are even shorter since you have the medical foundation already. I am not sure. I have a prior degree that included P.E so I am not sure if it is required for the nursing program. I don't think so but I could be wrong. The best thing you can do is to email [email protected] and ask them and they will tell you. The program is awesome! Very tough but a lot of fun. I am a weekend/evening student so my class size is smaller and we have class in the afternoon and clinical on Saturdays. We are like a little family, we can all count on each other. Come into the program with an open mind, you need to have a lot of flexibility. I am not sure what information you want to know but if you have questions feel free to ask me. As far as doing the program with kids. it is totally doable. We have a student who is 8 months pregnant right now, a student that had a baby two weeks before class started, and a lot of students that have kids of all ages. Most people with kids ask to be in weekend/evening. If you plan on doing the day class you are in class all day Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. You will select which class you prefer at orientation and they try to accommodate everyone.
