Wearing scrubs home?
Hi, I'm curious about nurses' scrubs in US. Is it true that you need to buy your own scrubs and wash it yourself at home? I saw on tv, some people wear scrubs on their way to/from home and somewhere in between, is it also happening? In Finland where I work, the facilities always provide uniforms for their staff (nurses, doctors, students, therapist, etc). We leave them at work after shift and the hospital laundry will take care of it. We just need to bring our own shoes. I would like to learn about nurses in other countries too! What is it like in your place? Thanks! Ryan

Nursing in Ireland
Hi Dara, Sorry for the late reply. Yes, one of the first things they asked was whether or not we need working permit, and that put things off. I did call agencies & hospitals and ask them directly if they will provide permits, I won't bother if they don't. It's end of year, i just started working in a local hospital. I'm going to start applying again in Jan/Feb. @Fiona59, we are well aware of that. However there are employers out there who provide working permits for non-EU nationals, so I think they still need extra hands. We just have to try harder.

Nursing in Ireland
Hi Dara, I'm more or less in the same position with you, only different country. Graduated, got NMBI pin, except that I don't have 1year experience (so you have more to offer!). Anyway, have you tried applying via recruiters? Just type nursing recruiters in Ireland, there are plenty of them. Send them email and call them if they don't reply. Also try private hospitals, nursing homes, long term care. And btw, no I haven't succeeded yet because most of them are looking for experienced nurse, which you are! For now, I am still working in the country where I live because I speak the language. If you speak Hungarian, perhaps you can also look for a job there. Good luck & big hugs! -Lee

What is a challenging specialty
Thank you, @operations. Your answer helped me see things from different perspective. I wrote down your answer and will share it with my friend. Also thank you, @direw0lf, for posting the spot-on, well-put question. Cheers.

Oral hygiene for bedridden pt
Hello, I'm a student and I have question about patient's oral hygiene i hope any of the members here can help. So, we had a 90y.o granny, who recently had an abdominal surgery. She is obese, bedridden and has drains coming out of her stomach. On my last day of practice, i helped her with her meal i noticed her mouth was dirty with food-stuff (mainly yoghurt). She doesn't communicate well and i don't think she can spit, not to mention gargle. She doesn't have much teeth left, so how would you clean her mouth and do it efficiently? I know this is very basic skill, but i would like to learn how to do this without taking so much time, I believe i will meet this type of client again in the future. Do you think that lemon-swabs are good enough? Any tips are welcome :) Thank you, Ryan.

Passing gas in the OR
Hello, I will start my clinical practice in the OR soon. I wonder if the members here have any experience about what to do during surgery, if for example, the bowel decides to pass some gas or we need to sneeze/scratch/cough. Also what do we do with glasses? Mine tends to slide when it's hot. I know these are all silly things to ask, but I would really appreciate your insights. Thank you, Ryan.

Working in Ireland without agency
Hi irishicugal, thanks for your response. I am in Finland, so if everything goes well, I should be able to get automatic recognition from the NMBI. I just thought about trying to get things done by myself. What about you? Do you mind sharing the agency's name you used? Lee

Working in Ireland without agency
Hello everyone, I'm planning to register with Irish nursing board (NMBI) and try to find a job with HSE. I'd like to do that without using recruitment agency. Anybody willing to share their experience with me please? Or is it even a good idea? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you :) Lee.
