  1. 81 on TEAS. 3.5 GPA considering main pre-reqs... had to use a gpa calculator as they are all transferred classes and do not lend me a cumulative GPA on my smart web transcripts. Called today and the guy said "in the next week or two.." I am a single mom returning to school after a heck of a time away from my original academic years and plans... I am praying for this!
  2. I'm waiting, too! I figure my scores are good, but the anticipation has me anxiously thinking of plan b's and C's. B for beauty school and C for Canada I guess... I talked to them over the phone a few days back and was told they were being sent through July. I am so happy, btw, to find an updated list here with current hopefuls!
  3. whoa there! i don't think windsurfer was being harsh! this is a common piece of advice which you will find yourself giving someday, whether you become an RN or LPN. it is like the common advice given to expectant moms on subjects like sleep and "make time for yourself..." yadayada... windsurfer is highlighting the difficulty that your family used to discourage you from a certain path. from first read- your family could be encouraging a "can do" mindset in you, rather than doubt. i just want to say that the difficulty involved in nursing soars far beyond the academic side... and windsurfer likely refers to these things. These are difficulties you will not know until you are there... read stories of experienced and early-years nurses! If you truly digest what you read, you will solemnly agree with windsurfer, not snap back! I hope (and I am honestly not trying to offend you!) that you understand it is important to be receptive to what even the most worn-out, rough around the edges nurses tell you. You will eventually come across them, and there IS value in what they say- not judgment, my dear! Too, in order to learn, and be one of the GREAT ones, RN or LPN, listen. again, not trying to offend.
  4. I want to become a nurse so that I can be there for the worst of times to offer love and tangible help... And this helps, because the idealization quickly disperses. It's going to be hard work, indeed. God bless all who put their hearts out there for their patients.
  5. I will add- I think going the route of LPN to a bridge program some day in the future is a great idea. The experience of an LPN is going to become more valuable to you than transcripts, if you can bring some grades up, too. Eventually, with confidence, psssh- people look at YOU, they listen to your motivation at interviews, your composure... I would go for the most accessible option (this is why I am going for an ADN) and work hard in it. The future opens up after you get that very first higher credential.
  6. Listen, I have had many major disturbances in my college career. I have had every reason to quit and to feel like a major failure. But to become a mother is your first high calling in life. If you put your heart and soul into raising your child, you learn the most important lessons there are about selflessness and serving others. This will prepare you to be a great nurse. You have time to work on the classes you have not done well in. There are alternative credit options such as online (current route I am taking for pre-req through edukan) and clep or dsst for general courses. Never give up. You are not a failure. God has a purpose in all things you have dealt with. Have patience with yourself. This is a long marathon, and whatever it takes, you can do it. Maybe start with one re-take of a class and when you have the grade you are proud of, go for the program. When I tried to get back in to school, they wanted to put me on remedial math. I don't have time or the heart for it, so I circumvented them and took an online ace credit course. Got a B in college algebra. Then I got my A&P I online with a B. Soon, A&Pii and microbiology will be behind me. I am a single mom with very little income and I am paying out of pocket until I can get into the nursing program of my local community college officially. I should mention I was about a year away from a completed Bachelor's in Art Therapy. Then I relocated, was surprise divorced (abandoned by husband) while pregnant, jobless, homeless...... But my baby boy inspires me to get this done and things have improved in my life slowly over time. You can do it. Keep your head up! Jamela Carnes
