Discrimination against males in the nursing profession.
I see. So by verbalizing the events that are witnessed and confirmed, I am whining? I'm glad for you and your love of double standards...not. I thought I was desiring to affect change. I haven't lied about any of what I have posted. Who are you to accuse me of having some other motive? What I see happens, and the guys that have the b*+lls to admit it are needed. Maybe you are just trying to "fit in."

Bullied? What the heck is this about?
I agree. I hate the idea of being a prude, but SHE holds the cards. It IS harassment, and you being male puts you at a disadvantage if you reciprocate on her level...they will side with the female, as messed up as that is. You need a trust worthy witness. Charge nurse, HR, Manager etc. she needs to be put on notice.

Facial hair for interview?
I have been offered every position I have applied for. I've done so with an ear ring if I was wearing one, fairly long, neT beard when I was wearing one...I interview well and I am a damn good catch. Sure, we are all given to our prejudices, but a solid candidate will not be ruled out for superficial reasons...at least that is how it's gone in my experience. Me personally, I respect and trust people who don't hide who they really are.

What do I do with my hands??
The title kind of explains my anxiety at this time. New Nurse Manager. I manage a small staff in an office setting. I am so thrilled to have this job, and I have been such a hard working, task and critical thinking individual for so long, that the switch to Manager and having my own office has got me wondering "what do I do with my hands?" I come from ER Nursing, so that should explain allot. I "see" some things that I need to "be," rather than "do" as a manager, have read manager article in an effort to understand the scope of my job NOW, but I am still antsy and have the feeling of "what should I be doing" all the time. It's only been a few weeks, and my preceptor is great, and she is giving some good advice like "spend time with your staff, watch what they do, get to know them and how this place functions." So that's what I am doing, along with reading everything I can get my hands on, listening to books on iPod, podcasts etc...Guess I'm just posting for therapeutic reasons? :-)... Idk...right now I am a sponge, any advice, encouragement will be absorbed. Thanks in advance exit96

Now That I'm Gone
I left my ER of 3 plus years for another adventure. I won't dredge up a bunch of dirt, and I had other reasons for moving on other than some of the "issues." SITUATION: there is a very troubling issue IMO going on in my former ER. While working there I had a few moments of "I really need to discuss this with my manager" moments, but then didn't. The reason I didn't, I guess I didn't want to be branded as "that guy." It also makes it difficult when I am a man and the issue is regarding treatment of male patients. Who wants to stick their neck out in a small place, and when I am a minority employee? Anyway, at this point, do I let Administration know, in an informal manner, without mentioning names, that there are some behaviors to monitor in that place? This is awkward to type, and every time I tried to verbalize it it never came out...so what now?

How do people feel about male nurses?
I think that ER I just left is really kind of a mess...

How do people feel about male nurses?
You are correct, and I left that job for several reasons. I shouldn't assume it is wide spread, you are correct. As far as strength, either gender doesn't have an advantage if the lifting isn't ergonomic...in ER there is no time for proper lifting. So both genders are at the same risk I believe.

How do people feel about male nurses?
I appreciate your post. However, I do have an opinion, and it is only an opinion. I believe that females are so accustomed to not having male caregivers, that they are using it to their advantage. While I understand differences between the sexes and sensitivities in general, I believe that many females are manipulative for this very reason. How would the female Nurses respond if male patients started demanding a male Nurse? Yeah, you know how they would respond. Have you ever seen a female Nurse place a Foley catheter in a male patient because "the patient refuses to talk? I have.... Can you imagine what would happen if a male Nurse did that to a female patient?! I've seen female Nurses respond in anger over the idea that equal privacy and modesty should be granted to both sexes. I believe it is wide spread. We keep playing into this discrimination, and I believe it is because Females Nurses are the Majority, and this isn't helpful, in fact it perpetuates the problem. As far as the"stronger sex and stronger back statement," that needs to stop as well. Believing that males in general have a stronger spine is unscientific and ridiculous.

How do people feel about male nurses?
I've always said "it should be a requirement to be a CNA for X amount of time before being a Nurse." This way, the lazy, averse to getting dirty, would be weeded out. This would make the herd stronger [emoji4].

Office Organizing
Here's a post that should be fun and helpful. I am a new Nurse Manager, and I am wondering what items make your office a fun, organized, efficient work space. RNator

Musicians, Artist career changers?
I think I stated myself clearly, but if not, here goes. I am a nurse, always wanted to be. But first I fell in love with music...right from the womb you might say. I could not live without music. Music, listening or performing is the ONLY thing that makes me feel THAT WAY. Family, job, etc are all good, but nothing takes the place of music. It's an unshakable obsession/love.

0200 BP's - Dealing with Tired Rude Doctors
And, tired Doctors can just get over it. They chose their vocation, not me. Nurses get tired too.

I'm with ya. What was the admitting Dx? Lots of great advice on this one. But myself, I'm wondering the same, why am I waking this person? I'm guessing it's protocol, or admission orders.

Musicians, Artist career changers?
Yes I do, but cover band stuff. It's fun, but not the same as pursuing a more creative life. I actually envy some local musicians that I know, who live a very meager existence, but live music, and live very simply. I've been caught up in the whole trap; "go to work, have a nice house, have a nice yard, have a nice car, appear successful," while living a boring calculated life, and it's past my time to get out of it and pursue a life of music as a way of life any longer. I do have a wife and children and a grandchild, I wouldn't trade any of this, but it's not an acceptable substitute for the artistic mind... It's not easy to verbalize....

Obesity; The "Second Hand Smoke" of Modern American Society
Seems like much allowance and sympathy for obese people here, but cigarette smokers are still the scapegoat for society... oh the irony. Obese people should be beaten upon just like smokers, alcoholics, drug addicts. Or perhaps, no one should be beaten upon? Tax each individual according to their sins? Smokers need a reprieve though, they have been taxed unfairly long enough, and no, I'm not a smoker...

Musicians, Artist career changers?
Elsa, Whether it's nursing or anything other than your art, don't do it until you've given your art a100% attempt. Success means different things to different people. Maybe just being able to live off of your art is enough...i know it would have been for me. Don't get sucked into this American culture of work a day blues. Nothing, nothing will bring you joy and satisfaction like your art will. I'm a musician, and I played it safe, and I regret that. What for? To please someone else? All I have ever needed is music, food and a roof over my head. Do what YOU want, no one else matters, nursing isn't going away, you can always come back.

Dear Preceptors
Good point!! Sometimes a nurse is cast into the role of preceptor and perhaps shouldn't be. Management needs to own their program 100%.

Here we go!
Thanks! That is exactly correct... If it doesn't end up being long term, then at least it's experience that ends up on my resume. What is your M-F job?
