I’ve been working at a pediatric doctor’s office for almost a year now. Before this job I was on a med-surg floor at a hospital. I only lasted 3 months and hated it. My co-workers were toxic, we were understaffed, and the patients were mean/disrespectful. I’m now thinking of going back to the hospital, but working on a pediatrics floor instead. Right now I’m working 8am-5pm everyday and feel like I don’t have any free time for appointments/errands. I liked working only 3 days a week when I was at the hospital. Does anyone have any experience making a switch like this? Any advice? I’m not sure how difficult it will be to get hired since I don’t have a lot of inpatient experience.

I’m a new grad with 3 months experience on a med-surg floor. I usually had 5-6 patients and it was too much for me. I was constantly running around the whole day with hardly any time to even go to the bathroom. There were a ton of meds to give out, constant calls from doctors and family members, a bunch of wound changes, getting patients ready to go for procedures, a lot of admissions, etc. What is something that would be more slow paced and easier for a new nurse? Would working at a LTC/rehab facility be better? Is night shift better? My main goal is to become a post-partum nurse, but there are no jobs I’m qualified for where I live. Most want at least one year of nursing experience to be considered. Thanks for any advice!

I want to become a nurse in one of these specialties, but almost all the jobs I see say they require experience in that area already. How did you start straight out of nursing school? And what did you do to get into a specialty? Thanks!

I thought I was doing well in my orientation until around week 9 when my preceptor starting telling my manager a bunch of things I was doing wrong. This was the first time I was aware of these problems. My manager called me in for a meeting and my confidence went down a lot. She said she was extending my orientation by 2 weeks. Since then I’ve made a few mistakes. None of my patients were harmed and I don’t see them as major but my manager does see them as big problems and was concerned. In our last meeting she said that she’s not completely sure if I will have a job at the end of orientation if she doesn’t see improvement. I’m not really sure what to do at this point. I will try really hard to do well in these last 2 weeks. If I don’t make it though should I still include the 3 months of experience on my resume? If I have to provide contact information I’m not sure if she will say anything good about me. This was my first job so I don’t have any other experience. I’m just really scared right now and need some advice.

I’m going to my manager’s office on my day off to pick up some paperwork. It’s not a meeting or anything, I’m just picking up the papers and leaving. What should I wear? Should I put scrubs on? Or just wear my casual everyday clothes (jeans, shirt, flip flops)?

I graduated in May and this is the first interview I'm going to have. The interview is with a recruiter. If I pass the interview with the recruiter I will then have an interview with the hiring manager. What kind of questions should I expect from a recruiter? Should I write down a bunch of possible questions with answers? I feel like I might be tempted to read off of my paper if I do this. How would you prepare? My interview is on Tuesday so I have a full 2 days to prepare. Thanks for any advice! I'm pretty nervous since this is all new to me.

I want to be a pediatric nurse. I however have no experience in this area. I'm afraid that if I apply and get a pediatric job that I will know nothing once I start. I don't want other nurses to think I'm stupid and I don't want to make a mistake and hurt a child. How should I get started if my goal is to be a pediatric nurse? Thank you for any advice!

I recently graduated and passed my NCLEX. I’ve been at home for about 2 months now because of the coronavirus. I’ve gotten used to living this way (sleeping in, having no homework or tests to study for, being with my parents and sisters 24/7, not a lot to worry about, etc.) Now when I think about applying for my first nursing job I get really nervous and want to put it off longer. I’ve been researching jobs around where I live, but none seem like what I want. I can’t find any full time post-partum or pediatric jobs. I also wanted to maybe apply for a residency, but I’m not liking the ones where I live. I don’t want to apply anywhere right now. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m lazy, nervous about my first job, or worried about the Coronavirus. Honestly, I feel really lost right now and I’m not sure what I should do. Any advice would be appreciated.

I can't seem to find much information about any residency programs in New Jersey. Has anyone been in one of these programs or have information on any? Thanks!

My professor only opened up the practice assessments for the 2016 Med Surg. How different is 2016 from 2019? Usually I study quizlets, but there are none for the 2019. Also any advice to get a level 2 or 3? Thanks ?

I'm interested in becoming an ER or pediatric nurse. After working for a while I might go back to school to get my master's so I can become a nurse practitioner. One of the main reasons that I'm doing the accelerated program is because it's less expensive like you said.

I've finally decided that I am going to become an RN. If you look at my previous posts you will see that I've been debating what I should do for a long time now. I'm planning on graduating with my bachelor's degree in health sciences and then doing an accelerated BSN program. I would have changed my major to nursing, but I had just missed the application due date and I would have had to wait another year to apply. I was also only a year away from graduating. I was wondering if any nurses could answer a few questions for me below. It would help me out a lot since I haven't shadowed a nurse yet. I am however hoping to shadow a nurse by the end of the summer. What is your favorite thing about your job? Least favorite? How many days and hours a week do you work? I'm going to be a sophomore in college next semester and I can't decide between becoming a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, occupational therapist, or physician assistant. I'm a very organized person and I want a career where I feel like I'm actually making a difference and accomplishing something. I also would like a job where I'm kept busy and never just sitting there with nothing to do. I don't know which one would be the best for me out of the four. Any advice would be great!

I'm planning on shadowing at a hospital sometime over the summer so I can decide on a major. My younger sister is also interest in the healthcare careers. Do you think a hospital would allow both of us to shadow together? I'm 19 and she's 17. She will be going into her senior year of high school and I will be going into my sophomore year of college. I'm also wondering if you think they would allow me to shadow multiple jobs. I can't decide between nurse practitioner, occupational therapist, and physician assistant. I do know for sure that I want a healthcare job though. Any advice on this? Thanks!

I'm currently a freshman in college and I'm trying to decide what I should declare for my major. I'm stuck between becoming an occupational therapist, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, and physician assistant. OT, NP, and PA all require a master's degree while I would get a bachelor's degree for an RN. I'm getting 2.5 years of college paid for so I'm willing to get a master's degree. I just want a job that makes me feel like I'm making a difference and helping people. If you could choose one of the four which one would you pick and why? I'm trying to decide between becoming an Occupational Therapist and an RN. I'm a freshman in college and I have to decide soon. It takes 5.5 years to become an Occupational Therapist and 4 years for an RN at my university. I get 2.5 years of college for free. Both have pros and cons and I just can't decide. My GPA right now is a 3.52. I want a job that helps people and makes me feel like I'm actually making a difference. I've heard that being an OT can be boring and you have to have a lot of patience. RN's have to deal with blood, vomit, etc. I'm considering shadowing both an RN and OT over the summer, but I would like to have some advice on which career I should choose. Thanks!

I'm currently an undecided freshman in college and I need to decide on a major before February. I'm stuck between becoming an occupational therapist or a registered nurse. Some things I like about an RN is that you make a difference in someone's life, you only work 3 days a week, and the job isn't boring since you're always doing something. Some things that worry me about becoming a nurse is that I will have to deal with some gross things such as blood, vomit, poop, and giving people baths. I also worry about the job being too stressful and too much work. I do feel like it would be very rewarding however. Some things that I like about becoming an occupational therapist is that the salary is high, it doesn't seem as stressful as nursing, and you help people. Some things I don't like is that I've heard that the job can be boring and I feel as if you're not making as big as a difference as a nurse would in someone's life. I'm currently a freshman in college and I'm undecided. I want a job that feels like I'm making a difference in someone's life. I also want a job that is exciting and not doing the same thing everyday. I've been considering nursing since I was a sophomore in high school and I can't seem to stop thinking about it. Other majors I'm considering are occupational therapy, counseling, and an elementary teacher. As you can tell I want a job where I help people. The only problems I have with nursing are seeing naked males, poop, and vomit. I've read a lot of comments online from nurses saying that they have to deal with these things on a daily basis and I don't know if I would be able to do it. I'm pretty sure that I would be able to make it into my university's nursing program however since I have a GPA higher than a 3.0. Can someone please give me some advice on what I should major in?
