How much did you really use your textbooks?
Hi everyone! I'm starting my ADN program next week. Syllabus was finally posted today and the textbook list is insanely long (and expensive.) It's nothing I didn't expect, but I'm wondering if I should rent/buy all textbooks now or wait to see which ones we use the most in class and purchase those. How much did you use the textbooks in your first semester? When I took A&P II we were required to purchase the $250 textbook but then we never referenced the book in class. I'm sure it varies by program and professor but I'm curious about your experiences. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks! PS if anyone has good suggestions on where to buy used nursing textbooks, I would love to know!!

Starting to doubt myself, does my plan sound reasonable?
Maybe you could try to get a tech job to get your foot in the hospital door while you're in school. The hospital where I work will hire LPN's and associate degree RN's if they can prove that they will continue their education after being hired. However, it probably depends on the organization and area demand. I'm going the ADN first route myself and my program starts next week! Good luck with whatever you decide.

Should I major in nursing? Advice please!
Is it possible for you to shadow a nurse or volunteer at a hospital or LTC facility? This may give you some insight on what to expect. Another great thing to do is get your CNA certificate. I'm getting ready to start a nursing program, so last semester I got my CNA and recently started working in the hospital. I was a bit worried about being "grossed out" too, but trust me, you get de-sensitized to poop/genitalia/etc VERY quickly. It's just the norm in a hospital setting. Best of luck!

12 hr shift makeup routine
I am so tired at 6AM that I stick to a fairly simple concealer and powder routine. Add some waterproof mascara/eyeliner and I'm good to go. I'm not trying to impress anyone, just want to avoid looking like a total zombie. NYX setting spray in Matte finish is the best. However, if I had extra $ (CNA starting nursing school here) I would buy Urban Decay!

As a CNA, What Was Your Starting Pay? 2015
I just started in a hospital 2 months ago with no prior experience and I'm making $12.50/hr. I was told this is the minimum wage for PCA's at our hospital.

What are you allowed to do?
I'm a hospital PCA in Kentucky and we do vitals, blood glucose, start telemetry, empty foleys/colostomy bags/JP drains, draw blood, obtain sputum/stool/urine samples, along with charting, baths, toileting, changing, feeding, etc. We are not allowed to pass or administer any kind of medication and are not allowed to adjust oxygen. However, my hospital doesn't require you to have your CNA license (I got mine before I was hired) because they do on-the-job training.
