  1. Congratulations on getting into the Nursing program! Unfortunately, they changed the whole curriculum starting with the class behind us (those who started Fall 2016 and will graduate Spring 2018). So there is no way for any of us to really know how the new program works or what is required. Maybe see if you can get in touch with people from one of the newer cohorts. Best wishes for success in the program!
  2. Given that it's a military transfer situation, they may be willing to waive the fee at that time (with documentation), but obviously you can't count on that ahead of time. Alternately, if you do explain your situation, they may be willing to hire you as a float or for per diem work so as not to get you settled into a single floor or department only to have you leave 10 months later. If you have a professor or clinical supervisor you feel you can confide in, they may be able to offer advice based on your current location's job market and how flexible the local hospitals are where you are. They may have even encountered a similar situation in the past and have some insight on how it can be handled.
  3. I got a Bachelor's in business back in 2014 after an Associates in accounting in 2011, and let me assure you that Nursing school is much, MUCH harder by far! If you are wondering about heading down this path I would encourage you to take a class in business, management, marketing, entrepreneurship, etc to see how you like it. Many communities also have non-profits that you can consult when you are starting a business for advice. If yours does, that would also be an avenue to pursue for ideas and advice. You will find it a whole lot easier than you might think to transfer your skills. Much of what you do in business and management is based on the same theories of trying to balance pleasing various stakeholders while providing good customer service and managing supply chains, etc.
  4. I'm just renting the Pharmacology book for Fall until I find out what our professor on the Collier campus will be using. This way I have the book ahead of time and if it turns out we need software access I'm sure it can be purchased separately. I've never seen access codes you couldn't buy directly from the publisher, and sometimes they're cheaper that way. Worst case scenario, it turns out I will have to purchase a new book/code bundle and I'm only out the $22 I rented it for. Totally worth it for me. Sometimes I've also emailed a professor ahead of time to ask if it's okay to purchase an older edition, or if we will actually be required to use the access card the bookstore has listed. That's always an option too.
  5. Absolutely do school first!!! I'm in Nursing school now, Associate level ASN-RN no less, and it is by far the hardest thing I've ever done academically, and this will be my 3rd degree. Previous Bachelors don't even compare. However hard you've heard it is, it's harder. Do yourself a favor and don't make it infinitely worse by having the demands of a young child at home. Those in our class who have kids are much more stressed and struggling than the rest of us, even when they have family helping out at home. Don't do it to yourself, your spouse, or your kids if you have a choice. It's not fair to anyone. As a side note, if your Bachelors in Psych is from the Philippines, it probably won't carry over to the U.S directly. I would recommend eventually speaking with an academic adviser at one or more colleges to see which courses they'll give you credit for, and what would be involved in transferring your degree over to here. This may vary from college to college, so if the first gives you discouraging news, check with a couple others who may honor more of your credits or even give you life experience credit toward some courses. I know it sounds like you won't be using your psychology degree any time soon, but once you get established as a nurse and get a couple kids into elementary school, it's something you may want to pursue later...especially if you ever consider focusing on psychiatric nursing.
  6. Mindfulone1 - There is no hard and fast rule that says you have to put graduation years on your resume. Just list your school(s) and the degree(s) you received (and GPA if brag-worthy). If and when an employer needs to know the year you graduated from a program, they will ask you.
  7. Having come across this article recently I wanted to pass it along. The potential treatment is probably still several years off, but it's something to keep track of, especially if your loved one is still in the early stages. At least there is a small glimmer of hope on the horizon as the baby boomers all come of age. I hope for the sake of those here coping with Alzheimer's in their family, that this gets fast-tracked to market swiftly if the trials go well. 8. For Collier campus we received the following email from Prof. Arcidiacono. On the first day of the semester, Jan 7th, I would assume you go to your Thursday class at the room number listed in your class schedule, regardless of which campus you're attending. "The first day of the Fundamentals of Nursing class is Thursday, January 7th at 9:00 am in N-103. The N building is the where the nursing department is located. If your Fundamentals of Nursing Practicum is on Thursday afternoons, you DO NOT have class that afternoon and you will start on 1/14. If you have Practicum on Monday afternoons you will start on 1/11. Your clinical day is on a Wednesday. The first two weeks of clinical will be on campus, not in the hospital. These days (1/13 and 1/20) will be from 8:00- 4:00, which is longer than the usual schedule of 6:30 to 1:00. When I see you in class on January 7th I will explain where we will meet. "
  9. That form has to be filled out and signed by a qualified hc provider. If you are not immune to something you need to get the required vaccine(s) for it ASAP. Contact your doctor's office and let them know you need to have that done. I had to get a couple myself before I could start turning in that paperwork. No biggie, but don't wait to get it taken care of because I think it CAN hold you up from starting clinicals.
  10. I ordered one set of scrubs and a polo from Sew Shore in Naples, and just picked up another polo from the bookstore. I want to order at least 1 more set of scrubs too. Other than that, I mostly just need to buy shoes and find some good khakis that fit comfortably (which is proving elusive as always). Then I'll need some new socks, underwear that won't show through the white scrubs, a watch, a stethoscope, my textbooks... It's never ending! lol I get paid again on the 15th and am on vacation after the 16th, so hopefully I should have the time and $$ to get everything next week.
  11. I purchased my clothing at Sew Shore in Naples: 3845 Beck Blvd #809 / Phone:(239) 774-4655 Beck Blvd is what Davis Blvd becomes on the east side of 951...so it is very near the Collier campus. They also give a small discount on merchandise for those of us in the Nursing program, maybe 10%? The discount is already taken into consideration for the price of the uniforms. I got one set of scrubs and one polo shirt for now, plus a penlight for about $4, and my total was about $60. There are a couple different brands of scrubs you can buy and I got the cheaper ones because they actually fit me better. The difference is only like $2 per item tho, so it's about the same no matter what you buy. I want to go back and get shoes next paycheck, and at least one more pair of scrub pants to go with the polo since I'm having trouble finding khakis that fit. #curvygirlproblems Not sure which shoes I'm getting, but they had a few pair that were white leather and looked comfy. Then I just need to buy my books and a watch and I think I'll be all set except for a stethoscope. Waiting to see what they are going to advise for that. Phew! Almost there!
  12. I would have been enrolled in school in 1976, so probably not...lol
  13. Unfortunately I don't know how Bright Futures works. It's always best to check with financial aid if you're not sure how something like that works. If you don't have time to go in and meet with someone, you can send them an email. They're pretty good about answering, generally within a day or two.
  14. No, you're fine so long as you are approved for financial aid in the Spring, and you've gone in and "accepted" it under the Accept Award Offer tab. If you (or anyone else) need help finding that, let me know and I'll list the steps.
  15. I was indeed able to register already; they had my acceptance letter and change of data form processed within 48 hours.
