I am a nursing student currently at New York City College of Technology, a CUNY community college in Brooklyn, NY. Upon entering nursing school I had a 3.914 GPA and received A's in practically every class I took, did well on the TEAS exam and was accepted into the nursing program at City Tech to receive ASN. The 1st semester was fine, Med Cal was super easy and everyone passed, and the Foundations of Caring (+clinical) was difficult at times but I passed with a B. Ever since then it has been downhill. In 2nd semester the professors were awful, clearly don't care about the students, yell at us for taking notes in class ("why are you taking notes, everything is in the book, just read the book 4 times!"), no exam review, won't let us see our exams or scantrons after our exams (even though when we saw them 1st semester we pointed out that the scantron machine made mistakes sometimes and marked a correct answer wrong), half of the stuff on the exams we have never talked about in class, we have shown our professor that the book says one thing (we're supposed to always go by our textbook) but that the exam question said something else but they say "oh yeah you're right, but I'm not giving you points for it, sorry", and despite going to every class and reading all the chapters I failed one of my Med Surg classes and am having to retake it. My experience retaking the class this semester is just as bad and I am doing even worse on exams despite studying more! As are the other girls retaking it. Every semester is having huge issues with the professors/faculty and the fact that they are not preparing us for these exams and therefore the majority is failing. This has all been brought up to our professors (who don't care and are rude and argumentative with us), then the Chairman of the nursing dept who ignores us, runs away from us in the halls so she doesn't have to talk with us and will not return emails, and eventually the student justice dept and the Dean of the school. So far nothing has changed, they are not reinstating test review so we have no idea what questions we got wrong and what we need to improve on, or if there were any scantron mistakes (those extra 2 points make the difference between passing or failing!). How are they satisfied with the students having a 30% pass rate on exams?! I know nursing school is hard, as it should be, and they try to weed out the majority, but don't they see that THEY are doing something wrong? Why won't they help us to be prepared to pass and be the best nurses we can be?! So many people are retaking or dropping or failing out already. I'm withdrawing this week and applying to a University to hopefully get a better education I can be proud of, even it it means paying a lot more money. I just want a faculty that cares and motivates/prepares its students. I'm just so exhausted. My question is....are all nursing programs like this or is my school just exceptional at mediocrity? If I try to complete nursing school elsewhere is it likely that I'll be met with the same obstacles? Are all nursing professors like this, like they're out to get you?
