Broward College Nursing January 2016
Nursing students, I posted this on the May thread as well. You can receive up to $8,200 in grant money for nursing through Broward Career Sources WIOA Act. I applied two weeks ago and received an approval email today. I went to the Oakland Park location and picked up an application. I brought it back completed with several required documents to orientation (8:30 SHARP every tuesday). I was told there are literally millions of grants just waiting to be handed out to students in need. If your total household income is under 40k you will be eligible. Here's some info http://http://www.careersourcebroward.com/CareerServices/DevelopNewSkills.aspx North Center 2301 West Sample Road Building 4, Suite 7-A Pompano Beach, FL 33073 TEL# (954) 969-3541 Central Center 2610 West Oakland Park Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311 TEL# (954) 677-5555 South Center 7550 Davie Road Extension Hollywood, FL 33024 TEL# (954) 967-1010 If you have a fellow nursing friend who is not on allnurses, please let them know about this opportunity. This is a great grant for someone ineligible for the PELL Grant because they already have a 4 year degree, or someone struggling to pay for tuition, books, and supplies.

Some more words of wisdom for newbies : get yourself a rolling bag off amazon. Your books weigh about 40-50 lbs. Use ceufast.com for CEUs, cost me about $35. Shop around for your BLS class. I spent about $60 I believe for mine. MAKE COPIES OF EVERYTHING for your portfolio. Make sure your socks cover your ankles. Ladies with long hair, NEVER show up to theory, exams, or lab with your hair not already up. The professors will make you step outside to put your hair up. Just make it easy on yourself, show up presentable. i utilize Amazon Student Prime for nearly everything - books, backpack, stethoscope... It is free for 6 months and then only $50 for the year. I have needed to order books quickly at times and receive them in 2 days. I alway pay less than bookstore price. Get a binder and dividers. I keep everything in one place. If you are not an organized person, things will be very difficult for you. Plan ahead. Professors will write you up for being late and an essay is required. Lastly, make a buddy. You can not make it in nursing school alone.

My study advice : if you work well in groups, form SMALL study groups. 3 people works well. I would get a study room in the library and do practice questions w/ my study group. It was not social time- it was work. My grades on the tests I did this were significantly higher than when I studied alone. DO PRACTICE QUESTIONS and LOTS OF THEM. There are several NCLEX books out there. There are sites like cram.com and nursinglabs.com that i use. Try answering the questions yourself before looking at the answers. I googled NCLEX test-taking tips and came up with some great ones. this was helpful Test -Taking Skills

She's right. there is also an Oakland Park office. I had to bring a lot of documents and attended a long orientation on Tue. Nursing is a career that want to help students pay for. I was told there are literally millions of grants just waiting to be handed out. If you aren't married or your household income in under 40k you will be eligible. Here is more info CareerSource Broward > Career Services > Develop New Skills https://www.broward.edu/financialaid/Documents/WIA-Application.pdf Workforce Investment Act - FloridaJobs.org I will know in a week is I qualified.

I am feeling completely lost and overwhelmed. I guess I should be skimming around? I look at the syllabus for theory and it is just topics. If anyone could please tell me exactly what chapters to study for Peter's that would be appreciated. I am going to request a meeting with her.

They have a great price for the physical, but unfortunately the tetorifice, tb, and hep would be additional costs. If you have insurance, most insurances cover the cost of immunizations. For instance for me, I was tempted to have my physical at MD Urgent, but I was told I would have to pay for all immunizations out-of-pocket as many of these clinics will not run your insurance for immunizations. If you do not have insurance through your workplace (I am 1099 and do not), I would sign up during open enrollment Nov 1 at healthcare.gov. Depending on your income, the gov't may help subsidize your monthly premium. You are going to be exposed to a lot of sickness and germs while in nursing school, so it may be wise to look into getting insurance through the open enrollment. One less thing to worry about.
