  1. Thanks for the feedback. I submitted my application, was chosen for the position, and have been in the E.D. for three weeks. It's scary. It's fast. But it feels like I could be at home here. I'm glad I went for it.
  2. I have never had that opportunity, but I hope I would administer whatever care I could to prevent infection or complication, including the benign and tedious application of Vaseline, but I would take that opportunity to educate the student about the hazards and complications of tattooing, the development of the prefrontal cortex, and the reality of adult regret. It might be the only contact time s/he has with a healthcare professional who cares.
  3. I'm a second year med-surg-tele nurse (RN) considering a transfer to the ED. Should I continue to get some more confidence and experience in med-surg nursing before I transfer, or just jump in? My hospital has what I am told is a fairly extensive reorientation (several weeks), but I'm getting mixed signals. Our ED serves a major southern urban population. I'm looking for advice either way and descriptive explanations for your opinions. Thanks in advance!
  4. Yes, Nicole.
  5. While there are no guarantees about clinical schedules in the community, generally speaking, the faculty and school is closed on the weekends, so daytime classes have the weekends and holidays off. That said, students are encouraged to do what they must to maintain flexible schedules. Changes are often made last-minute. I wouldn't make any plans to be out of town or pre-committed to anything else, including a job, while in nursing school. This is a good time to organize priorities to favor the task at hand -- success in Nursing School.
  6. I was told the same. No handbook here yet either. Thanks, Brittany, for the Fb heads up! The LORD nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.” **Psalms‬ *41:3‬ *NLT‬‬
  7. Anybody turned everything in yet? I'm navigating the scholarship application and looking forward to orientation. I'll be there. Who's with me? Sound off and introduce yourself! I'll start: My name's Todd, and I'm beginning my second career. I graduated from Nease in 1987 and returned to FSCJ in 2013 after a long break. I am passionate about fitness and enjoy running. Next? The LORD nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.” **Psalms‬ *41:3‬ *NLT‬‬
  8. Stxgirl2009, I'm sorry you're experiencing both the anxiety of old guilt and the disappointment of a question unanswered. While no one, not even a lawyer, can make you promises or solid assurances, I can speak to the background check, having performed hundreds of them and thousands of arrests in my prior law enforcement career. If the police weren't involved in your detainment, then you WERE NOT arrested. Since criminal background checks are searches for arrest history, this will be clean provided this is the only skeleton in your closet. As previously mentioned, employment verifications, on the other hand, are human-to-human conversations, which may reveal details about your termination. The good news for you is that no licensing board anywhere will deny your application based on ill-will between you and a previous employer; their criteria are higher than your worries. Rest easy and always tell the truth - but only when asked; don't volunteer more than you are prompted. The LORD nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.” **Psalms‬ *41:3‬ *NLT‬‬
  9. The Meridy's skill pack is now available. It ships directly to the school, so don't count on seeing what is in it till then. The cost is $75. The LORD nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.” **Psalms‬ *41:3‬ *NLT‬‬
  10. B With -60dB loss in upper frequencies and bilateral behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids, I experience the same problem. You are not alone, Annie! I will soon start nursing school, and I am battling anxiety where auscultation is concerned. Every article and resource I have come across has failed to assuage the fear of having to remove my hearing aids for this purpose. That seems contrary to aseptic techniques and extraordinarily inconvenient. Even the manufacturers of the electronic scopes that pair with hearing instruments via Bluetooth caution that the devices must be tuned by an audiologist to augment lower frequency sounds and disable automatic background noise reduction. Since mine is a higher frequency loss and digital noise reduction is one of the main reasons I purchased my Widex Dream hearing instruments, this will be a last resort consolation. My hope is that, whichever stethoscope I employ, I can find ear tips that surround the receivers of my hearing instruments so I won't have to constantly remove and reinsert them. (This practice is found in a great article I found at Amplified Stethoscope Options for Professionals with Hearing Loss A. U. Bankaitis Hearing Aids - Adults Assistive Devices 860.) I have toyed with different stethoscopes, including the Mac-Daddy Littman Cardiology III, but oddly enough found the fairly inexpensive ADC Adscope Lite worked fairly well, and the ear tips fit nicely around the receivers of my devices. I haven't used it in practice yet, though, so my anxiety is still there. I haven't yet been trained what to listen for, so I'm not exactly sure what I'm missing. I know it's not all about the lubb-dub!
  11. For information, the Meridy's skills pack (SP139) is not available yet due to changes being requested by the college. Professor Burns told me in an email she expects it to be available by orientation. Until then, entering our code on Meridy's website will generate an error code. I hope this saves someone some worries.
  12. Did anyone else get a misprinted page in the packet that said our physicals must be done "after November 1"? That would leave only one day to get them. Ms. James sent me a corrected page that said October 1, but I wondered if word got around to everyone effected. For the record, "Physical exam must be completed after*October 1, 2015..."
