PS I love this man with all my heart! He may be "cantankerous and ornery" with me, lowly Dogan that I am, all he wants, but he loves his grandboys! And that is all I care about! I thank the small gods every day that he survived to teach them all he knows about hunting, fishing and snaffling coo beasties!

As someone who is "not a nurse", but has many family members who are (thus, I follow this page), from personal experience? FIL, had his 1st MAJOR heart attack at age 32. followed by numerous "minor" attacks there after. TOLD by various Drs that he would never live to see 50. AT approx age 55, collapsed at home. No discernible pulse. MIL provided CPR while my SIL (age 15) called 911. Today, he is now aged 73, cantankerous and ornery a man as you ever will meet! Lesson? Don't give up! There is always a chance!
  3. AND I just figured out to hit "quote" not "reply" to keep everyone in the loop. Will try to do better in the future
  4. Farawyn : Sorry, first day on site posting. was trying to respond to anothers comment about my original post about laughing at an ER nurses response to a note left in my hospital file. The responder (sorry, too late in the night to go back and figure out who) responded-" Pain is subjective. If YOU don't think it's painful, it's not for an ER nurse to insist that it is. Irresponsible of him/her to say that to you." My intent was to dispute his/her opinion of "not for an ER nurse to insist" . My original post was about the fact I am NOT a nurse, I DO know what GOMER stands for, and at that point in time, I considered myself one, even though medical staff did not agree. And, that my pain scale is off, according to the ER staff/docs in my town.
  5. Why are you offended by her comment? I wasn't! In fact, I found it humourous! #1 - I had to explain to her that, yes, I knew what a GOMER was, and why/how I knew the acronym #2 I AGREED with Dr "starts with S, ends with ski(cause, although I have seen him myself 3 times, twice with my boys in the past 20 yrs, I cannot for the life of me remember his full name), my pain scale IS OFF! 10 was a breech birth, no meds, rush to the OR, too late, emergency episiotomy to assist ; 9.5 was en-caul, posterior, pressing on sciatic nerve, cord wrapped and calcified, no meds, NO DOCTOR! THANK THE LORD FOR LD NURSES!!!!! (according to my hubby, took 4 surgical packs to stitch me back up once DR "I was at a dinner party, I didn't think I needed to rush" bothered to show) I REFUSED both Oxy and Perc because I DO NOT like the "helium filled frontal lobe", augmented hearing/sight/every vibration in the house feeling. She was most likely used to "T3s do nothing for me" type patient. So, here is a question for you. Ever had a patient apologize for being at the hospital because they felt it was a waste of your/hospitals time and/or resources? CAUSE THAT WAS MY REASONING FOR CALLING MYSELF A GOMER!!! I think the nurse was just SHOCKED that a non-medical person used the phrase!! AND refused powerful pain meds!
  6. Long time lurker (2+yrs) first time poster. NOT a nurse, but too many family members to count who are/were RNs, RNAs, LPNs, head of RT, techs of various sorts. This post about acronyms made me laugh at the last time I ended up in the ER (cracked elbow, fell gardening, don't ask) and seen my hospital file (which the nurse "forgot" on the end of my bed) Page 1(sticky note, so not in official file), in BOLD letters was a statement from one of the ER docs (from the previous time I was in, had not kept anything down/in system for 3 days, hubby forced me to go to the ER and SURPRISE, the electrolyte drink they gave me stayed put - although I was kept for another 3 hrs while they ran 2 banana bags into me) that said "Patient will describe self as GOMER - DO NOT BELIEVE! also pain scale is out of whack - she rates a broken bone as 8.5 - childbirth of butt first breech, no meds, is her 10" When I asked my nurse about it, she stuttered and then said "You are the ONLY person I've heard of in my10 yrs say they were a GOMER and REFUSE Oxy and Percs for what is obviously a painful situation."
  7. If you find said shirt, let me know where! I am POSITIVE my hubby and boys will buy one for me!
