  1. Hello, Some background: I'm an RN with my BSN and 2 years of ambulatory experience in pediatrics. I've recently also become certified as a pediatric nurse (CPN). I've been doing my best to learn as much as possible in a short time and see myself in a leadership position in the future. My question is, my employer office tuition assistance up to $3,000 per year. I'd like to take advantage of this job perk but many master's programs are much more expensive and I'm unfortunately not in a position to pay much out of pocket or increase my debt load. My local technical college office an associates degree in health care management. With the credits already obtained from my BSN I could complete this degree in only a few semesters. The tuition would also be substantially cheaper and most likely covered/reimbursed by my employer. I know that there are some nurse supervisor/management positions do not require any additional education but I figured it certainly wouldn't hurt. My question is if it looks bad to obtain an associate's degree when you already have a bachelor's or any additional thoughts you may have. Thanks!
  2. My nursing supervisor approached me today to show me a photo that had been posted by my employers twitter account. The photo is of me doing a procedure on a patient while at the same time promoting said procedure. The parent of the patient apparently took the photo (unbeknownst to me) and submitted it to my employer. We have a policy of no photos/videos in patient care areas and families sign a form that they acknowledge this policy. Not only that, but the parent is apparently a physician assistant who also works for the company! My employer did not ask for my permission prior to posting this photo. Where do I go from here?!
  3. Hi all, I'm looking for advice from those with experience administering MDI/nebulizer treatments to toddlers. I've scoured the internet looking for resources but thought my best bet would be from those with actual experience! Mostly looking for any recommendations to make life easier for those terrified 2 year olds who are fighting the nebulizer/MDI and for the parents/nurses attempting to administer the medication. My patient today fought so hard that the provider eventually prescribed albuterol syrup (which I never knew existed honestly). Any tips/info would be greatly appreciated.

  5. Hello, I am curious as to what retirement options those of you who are school nurses receive/are eligible for? Are you eligible for the 457(b) like most teachers are? Any info would be great! Thanks,
  6. Hello all, Just wanted to get some advice. I am a relatively new nurse. I graduated a little over a year ago and have been working in a pediatric primary care clinic since. I am really enjoying pediatrics but worry about limiting myself to this specialty. We see healthy and sick children but really nothing too intense. My employer is the only pediatric hospital in my area and they also own most if not all of the primary care and specialty clinics. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to try to get a prn job in adult care to both maintain my skill set and diversify my experience just in case. I am a good employee and don't anticipate leaving my job or getting fired but it just makes me nervous because it seems I'd have nowhere else to go if something were to happen in my current position. I'd like to know your thoughts. Thanks!
  7. Hello, Just wondering why some primary care clinics (or even specialty) have medical assistants and others have RNs? The only thing that I could find online is that medical assistants aren't trained in telephone triage but the rest of their job descriptions seems similar to a clinic RNs. At the doctor's offices I've been to it's always a medical assistant that I see with them, yet I see many clinic RN positions hiring in my area. Do you think clinic RNs will eventually be replaced by MAs? Any insight into this would be appreciated! also- do specific specialties (ie: pediatrics) require RNs over MAs?
  8. I graduate at the end of December but my BLS expires in January. Do employers pay for their new employees to renew their certifications or should I be trying to schedule my renewal prior to getting a job? Thanks!
  9. ACLS is required once you land a job as an RN right? I imagine that would be something the employer would pay for as part of your training? Is it worth it for me to spend the money on it prior to applying?
  10. I just applied to a nurse extern job so hopefully that works out. I get the feeling that getting your foot in the door somewhere before graduation is way easier than getting a job post graduation/NCLEX.
  11. There is an NSA at my school actually. That would be a good option with minimal time commitment. Is Sigma Theta Tau for academic achievement? Can you only be invited?
  12. Hello all, I'm looking for ways to make my resume more attractive for when it comes time to apply for jobs. I have 2 more semesters left before graduation. I was going to get certified as a CNA but was told it would be rare for a place to hire and train me as a CNA knowing I'll be an RN in a little over a year. Thinking of volunteering or something. Any ideas? Mandy
