  1. I think we should take action and petition the credentialing bodies to remove the credentials of the FOR PROFIT schools, or atleast raise the the dang standard. Letters flooding in would surely get things going in the right direction. But then again maybe I am painting too broad. I just hope there is some degree of oversight with these schools. Too often it appears that the industry is moving from an altruistic driven profession to a monetary driven profession. Which would be a major crime in taking care of other human beings.
  2. Is it not ironic to argue for more science courses when someone also states there is already insufficient time to learn what is already required? This is the exact reason why I support the terminal DNP. Take out some of the courses as you all suggest, and replace them with in depth science courses like physiology, and lastly extend the program to a doctorate. On a unrelated note. You all who are responding on the thread are the reason I like allnurses. I highly value your opinion
  3. I agree with psychguy, but he most likely does not remember the mechanism of action to dipeptidyl peptidas-4 inhibitors because he hardly prescribes it therapeutically (outside continue home mess). Because we have no excuse not to remember the mechanism of action for mess we typically prescribe. Hold our selves to the same standard as PAs or MDs. That being said I doubt we will remember everything and most likely forget things outside what ever specialty we go into. The key is being a lifelong learned! Student for life!
  4. For anonymity if you really want to know just PM me. I am quite proud of my school but due to the size of enrolled students I could be inevitably giving away my name. Good luck in your program search.
  5. I am presently finishing up my Nurse Practitioner education at one of the best NP schools in the South East, and I had to take a whole semester long class on reading general films (chest and abdominal), suturing (Simple interrupted, vertical/horizontal mattress, running suture, and figure 8 stitch) and interpreting diagnostic lab values. However, it is sad that this is not the general educational curriculum that is set around the country. At this present moment there are online schools where a nurse can get their Masters without ever having to show up on campus more than a few times.... How could they ever educate a competent provider is beyond me. Employers should definitely inquire about school, clinical experience, and RN experience prior to hiring.
  6. On a personal note though I do support PAs getting a doctorate if they want to. This article was interesting to read and it will be even more interesting to see where things evolve to in the future.
  7. Very true..... I am sure there are nurses here that did better in one subject and didn't do as great in another (medsurg vs OB).
  8. In addition, this could work out for the best for all parties. If Phyiscian assistants can obtain independent practice through doctorate education the medical community wouldn't have much of an argument against us with our DNPs. I am all for independent practice and I will always support further education.
  9. Psychguy I really respect your knowledge and comments here on allnurses, but in all do respect I believe off label was referencing capability. Because I wouldn't want anyone who couldn't get an A to cute me open, but I do agree I don't think embryology is much of a perquisite to orthopedics :)
  10. May I ask what school you attended? I am surprised they haven't offered to help!
  11. Thank you for your reply. I completely agree with you that for new graduates whom have had only a few years of RN experience should undergo a fellowship/residency of some sort. We have a duty to our patients and at the end of the day we are responsible. Mandating a minimum requirement of two years should definitely be implemented. I personally don't know anyone who hasnt been a nurse for two years in my program. Furthermore, I agree that any master's level education should be rigorous. Mine has personally has. I find myself studying 10 hrs per day on top of trying to manage 20+ week clinicals. Nurse Practitioner education should be more difficult (of course in a different way) than you previous degree in my opinion. Would it be fair to assume that PA education and MD education is more rigorous than nursing school, we should expect the same. Thanks for the reply Jules!
  12. This is a topic for those whom have already graduated Nurse Practitioner school; what was your experience? Did you find NP school to be more difficult, as difficulty, or less difficult than nursing school? -Do you think we are doing enough to prepare future NP to practice safely -What are your recommendations for the standards we should be held accountable to
  13. Since I can't vote I'll state my opinion. I believe a NP should have two-four times on boards. The range is for extraneous variables do to life. If a NP fails on their fourth they must do some serious personal evaluation. Remediate and study for a year or find a different vocation. The best thing about nursing is also a constraint; that we are such an altruistic profession we sometimes inable. I believe a max of 3-4 times ensures our Profession by keeping a standard, however we would not be where we are if we didn't care for other individuals. I am obviously a nurse right now in graduate school, but my question comes from seeing people take the NCLEX 4+ times and hearing about multiple attempts at NP boards. So thank you for your vote. I am slightly surprised that no one has chosen the last option yet. :)
  14. How many times does the "allnurses" community think it is okay to retake the board exams prior to remediation? For instance what's everyone's opinion on having to take boards six or more times? Please vote in the poll! :)
