I have tried several different areas in nursing such as school nurse, LTC, cardiac, medsurg, and I was even a liaison for a rehab hospital. I have found that physical rehab suits me and that is where I work now, which has led me to want to become a physical therapist assistant. A lot of jobs in my area require a bachelors degree, and I only have my associates. I don’t have any interest in spending more money on a nursing career that I’m not all that happy in already. I have been around therapists for a while now and I think I would be good at it. ??‍♀️

Just wondering if anyone has left nursing to pursue something different in the medical field? Or something different all together? Do you feel like you made the right decision, or do you regret it? I have been thinking about making a career change, but staying in the medical field. I would keep my license active by maybe working PRN somewhere. But I don’t want to work as a full time nurse the rest of my life. I’m afraid to make the change, but I don’t want to be unhappy anymore either. I would just like to hear from anyone else who can relate and what you did to change. thanks!

Hi all, I have recently been looking at an MDS Manager position, but I have not applied yet. I am curious as to what the pros/cons are of this position. Of course I want to help people, but maybe try helping in a different way. I have done some research on MDS and I would like some input on how you feel you are making a difference, what a typical day is like and how high is the stress level? I have spent 2 1/2 years in a SNF as an LPN. Then I became an RN and decided to step out of my comfort zone and work in a hospital on a cardiac unit, which I am starting to regret. I am not happy there, and my stress level is extremely high. I know that nursing is not easy, but where I am now is miserable. My heart is with the elderly population and I have been considering going back to the nursing home setting. Any input is greatly appreciated!!

Hey guys, I have been working in LTC as an LPN for about 3 years now and I just graduated with my RN in August. I stayed at the LTC facility for another month but they moved me to the rehab unit which I absolutely hate. Nurse to patient ratio is 1:20 and it's just too much. I was not trained on this unit so I'm still learning but every night I come home and just want to cry. I had an interview today for a rather large hospital in my area, and it's on the cardiac unit. They told me the ratio is 1:5 or 1:6, however I realize that they are more critical. And eventually I can cross-train in CICU. I just found out that I got the job, and I am very nervous. I feel like this is a huge stepping stone in my career but I think it's for the best. While I'm working out my two week notice, I want to go back and review all things cardiac. Any other suggestions on how to be prepared for this major transition?? I want to feel at least somewhat prepared when I start orientation! Thanks in advance for any advice for this baby RN!

Also what is the typical nurse to patient ratio in this field??

Hi all! I am currently working as an LPN at a LTC facility and I am in school for my RN. I love working with the elderly, but I have always had an interest in psych. I am currently taking my mental health class and doing my clinical rotations at a state psych hospital, and I love it. I've considered pursuing psych when I graduate, however my main concern is losing my nursing skills. So it occured to me that maybe I could combine the two and work in geri-psych. My question is how much do you actually use your nursing skills working in geripsych? Im really trying to avoid the medsurg units. Ive heard too many horror stories!

I know this thread is old, but i'm hoping someone can help me out. I am about to start the n/w program and I am wondering when clinicals are. I know they start the 2nd semester, but are they only on weekends? if so, are they during the day or at night? I need to find out to see about my work schedule. Also about how many clinicals per semester can I expect?

You are not alone! I work two jobs: My main job is school nursing. The pay is less than other jobs, but you get your own office away from other people besides the kids. Occasionally, the teachers might come in there, but you will have your own space to work and you can organize it how you like. Plus you get holidays, weekends, and SUMMER VACATION! For my second job, I work PRN in LTC. I make my own schedule and I work different halls, so I don't have the same residents every single day. I used to work this job full time, 5 days a week, 8 or 9 hour shifts depending on how crazy it was. It drained the life out of me and I just wanted to sleep on my off days to get my energy back. But I absolutely love working PRN. During the summer when I am not working the school job, I try to work 2 or 3 days a week in the nursing home. So I have lots of extra time at home with the hubby and furbabies :) Good luck to you!

Hey guys. I am a former Jeff State nursing student and I am going to be coming back to the night/weekend program this fall. Just want to tell yall my experience with the textbooks. I bought the bundle when I attended back in 2012. I never used the textbook codes, and there were a few books I never even opened. Some of the books are more for clinical paperwork, such as the pathophysiology book and careplan book. For the first semester (speaking to n/w program only) I would only worry about getting your Health Assessment book, Pharmacology book and your dosage calculations book, and maybe a pocket drug guide. Those can be found on amazon like yall have mentioned and it is SO much cheaper. Second semester, you will of course want to get your fundamentals book, but I HIGHLY recommend a care plan book as well. You will be so glad you have it when it comes to the dreaded clinical paperwork. A pocket lab values book is good also. The first time I was in nursing school they really pushed for us to buy the bundle so I did. I never used half of that crap to be honest. So save yourselves some money!

Night/weekend program at shelby for me. I keep checking my email and this thread every day. The wait is killing me

Hey everyone! I have applied to the nights/weekends program at Shelby for this Fall. I was in the Jeff State FT program at the Jefferson Campus a few years ago, and I got halfway through and failed But I was determined to start somewhere, so I got my LPN at another school. I have been working as an LPN for a year now and love it, but I decided it's time to get my RN. I know there are bridge programs, but this program at Jeff State is close to my house and it works with my schedule, since I work full time days. I applied with 218 points and hoping that is enough to get in!
