Be careful with any 100% online CPR certification courses. Many of them are not accepted by reputable institutions. Both Red Cross and American Heart Association offer blended online courses where you complete the coursework online and then perform an in-person Skills Session to complete the certification. Mandy, It's very possible that you could take a Heartsaver class and still not have met your institution's requirements. I would recommend anyone that is in your shoes to clarify with the administration whether you need a healthcare provider CPR class or a layperson CPR class. Great question. With the introduction of "Hands-Only" or "Compression-Only" CPR in the mainstream, aside from an unsafe situation, there are not many barriers to providing assistance in the event of cardiac arrest.

Hi Codeblue, Thanks for posting! The foundation of CPR is the performance of effective chest compressions. Compressions need to penetrate the adult chest at least 2 inches. The only way this is possible is due to the "elasticity" provided by the rib-cage and sternum. In the prone position, you would have no way to apply direct pressure to the sternum, alone. Pressure applied to any other location in the chest will most likely produce a rib fracture and increase the possibility of chest cavity trauma. I hope this has been a help, Randy

Hi Michelle, there are CPR courses for various walks of life. You will need a healthcare provider CPR class. If Red Cross is accepted, you'll be looking for CPR for Professional Rescuers. If American Heart Association is required, you will want Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
