What are other accelerated programs like? (University of Rochester here)
Ah, thanks for the feedback everyone! It's nice to hear that it's the norm, and yes, the goal is to be a minimally competent nurse and this is how you get there. I was so unsure, since my undergrad was all about research and being able to understand the concept thoroughly. So learning about all these disease processes etc, only to not be thoroughly tested on it was odd for me. Thanks everyone!

I can't seem to be able to PM you, you can PM me instead if you like.

Yeah, I'll send you a PM on allnurses.com now. For me, I chose UR for the clinical hours, because I believed hands on skills and practice was the most important. What I neglected to ask was the clinical instructor to student ratio, 1:7~8. I wish I had asked the other programs I got accepted into, what their ratio was.

Yeah, maybe. I've studied the NCLEX along the way, and the NCLEX style questions seemed pretty easy compared to how UR tested us. So you're right, maybe it does help. I was never worried about failing the NCLEX, but would have much preferred that the exams they gave us reflected more on our knowledge. If they felt it was really important for us to know how to take the NCLEX, then they could have implemented a different class or workshop on it. Are you a current nursing student?

What are other accelerated programs like? (University of Rochester here)
Hey, I was curious to see what other schools were like. I chose UR for the clinical hours, and that it's suppose to be a good school. I'm towards the end of my program and have been kind of disappointed with the program. I wonder if maybe I should have chosen a different program. In my experience with this program, there's a lack of student support, and half the teachers I've had didn't know how to teach... and rightfully so since they've never learned how to be a teacher... The school has been getting poorer NCLEX pass rates and in an attempt to prevent that, changed the exams to NCLEX style. So the exams are testing more on our test taking skills on a computer, vs a paper exam that tested our knowledge. So I guess a good thing about the program is that it's 12 months long and they have a strong desire for you to pass the NCLEX.The lack of student support, politics and favoritism though.. Some other students have said that other programs are worse, but I couldn't take their word for it, because they didn't attend other nursing programs. Thoughts? Thanks.

University of Rochester ABPNN May 2016
Hey Everyone, I'm graduating this May from the University of Rochester, ask me anything about the program. There are some questions that I wished I had asked Elaine/Nancy and my interviewer like the clinical instructor to student ratio and how accommodating the school is to the students who may be having personal issues. I recommend that you ask every program you apply to, ask what they think some weaknesses of the programs are and what their strengths are. I highly recommend you ask the recent NCLEX pass rate, and the percentage of students passing the courses.

University of Miami Accelerated BSN Summer 2015
So that's what I thought (about the car situation) and was extremely surprised when AC said I didn't really need it. As for clinical, she told me the majority of it is in one semester, I think the last. Whereas the majority of the time, we'll be on campus. When I asked how we'll get to clinicals, she said there's a metro that goes straight to a hospital.... I was thinking that the schedule would be 8 to 4, monday to saturday, like other ABSN schools. But AC said something like class starting at 7 am, and it could be a 7 am to 7pm day, and therefore I should try to live near campus. D:

Thanks! I'm from Seattle and traffic gets crazy bad here! Parking in the city usually cost more per hour than our min. wage too. But that's just a random fact.. I spoke with AC this morning, and she seemed to have recommended that I not bring a car, which was really surprising to me. Other ABSN programs I've applied to, highly suggested that I did. What are you guys planning to do?

Oh my goodness! That is expensive!! I think I'll try looking for an apartment between the main campus and medical campus. How is the traffic there?

@Aggio Your stats sound good! It might work to your advantage that you graduated from UF, since UM may be familiar with the curriculum. As for verification, I think that part comes from NursingCAS. Either UM sees your app, and I think it's just a waiting game now. Although i don't think you have to wait as long as we did, since school starts in May and they need to give applicants enough time to get their stuff together.

@risser Thank you risser, I really appreciate it! :) I guess it's just one step at a time. And I ended up doing exactly what you advised. I got access to Canelink today and was able to view everything. Do you know the average price for apartments around Coral Gables? And where would you be staying? Also congratulations to your acceptance as well!!

University of Miami Accelerated BSN Summer 2015
Hey Everyone! I've just been accepted to the May cohort and am super nervous about getting the forms in time!! It turns out I was accepted earlier this month, but I had extreme snaaaail mail. So I still have to pay the deposit and still don't have the option in Canelink. Just wondering, what are you guys thinking about for housing? I was thinking about living between the main campus and medical campus, but even then, I'm not sure where our clinical are held. Also I have no clue which neighborhoods are the most affordable or safest. I'm coming from the West Coast, so it's going to be huge move for me. Thanks!
