Just the standard "Why should we choose you for our program?" "what is your biggest strength? Biggest weakness?" Kinda questions :)

Professionalism as a student
OK. Don't laugh at me for this question (too much). I'm curious about my image as an FNP student. I love bright colors and cute accessories... I'm the nurse with the bright colored Vera Bradley bag, rainbow bell stethoscope, hot pink monogrammed clipboard, psychedelic compression socks, crazy shoes (Alegrias, Sketchers, ASICS, whatever I can find that is fun and funky), etc. As an FNP student, do I need to tone it down? Do I need to hone a more "professional adult" image? Should I tone it down to appear more serious? Does this really matter? Would love input from the peanut gallery- newbies and the been-there-done-that crowd. (SIDE NOTE: I'm actually a "non-traditional" student, so therefore I'm certainly an adult. My hair is its *mostly* God-given color-- like I said, non-traditional student, gotta cover the gray! --, my make up is neutral, I do have a small tattoo on my wrist, but it's covered by my wristwatch, and I am a conservative person in the Deep South LOL... So, my definition of "funky" may vary from yours')

Preparing for MSN-FNP... The equipment edition
I'm curious. I'm starting an FNP program in the fall and am trying to get my ducks in a row. The question is... Do I need to have both a regular adult stethoscope and a pediatric stethoscope? I know that in our local children's hospital, the nurses in the nursery use infant steths, but those working "peds" just use run-of-the-mill adult steths. Should I look into pediatric or infant stethoscopes for clinical work? Ultrascope has one with an available dual head, so the head can be swapped from adult to peds if need be... But, if I don't need multiple steths, I love my Littmann. What will serve me best in the long run? Would love to pick your brains!

going straight into becoming an NP after BSN?
I completed my ADN in May '15, BSN in May '16, and will be starting my MSN-FNP in August. I believe the experience is HUGE, but I also feel that going into the program with much of my "book knowledge" fresh in my mind can be beneficial, as well. Can I say this for certain? No... I don't even start until August, but... I will succeed. Know how I know that? I'm too stubborn to fail.

How fast did you land a job?
Most of my graduating class (43 of us? I think?) had jobs secured with a contingency on passing NCLEX. Our program has a tremendous reputation in the area, though. I know others from other programs who struggled a bit.

Samford FNP Fall-2016
I think it's under "accept award"? I have a hold d/t "unusual enrollment history" so I can't accept yet. I called and its from my graduating with my ADN 5/15, BSN 5/16, and now enrollment in grad school-- they said it wasn't an issue, just needed my final transcript from UA, which I ordered last week. And yes, I got my acceptance email and then another email with my SUid in the next day or two. I officially accepted and paid my deposit on 5/13... The deadline to accept or decline was 5/13 with the deposit being due by 5/15. So for y'all who are wait listed, I'm sure you'll hear something soon because now they'll know what spaces are available. Good luck!

are mandatory scrub color-coding in hospitals the wave of the future?
Our hospital has all RNs wear a white scrub top with their unit's designated color bottoms and the other departments like RT, Lab, CNAs, Sitters, etc all have specified solid color sets. Luckily (I reckon), we can purchase any brand as long as it meets the color requirement. Because I'm picky about the material my scrubs are made from (I hate ironing, so... certain materials just don't fly with me) and like getting to select something semi-"stylish" (for scrubs, that is).

Visible tattoos
Tats have to be covered up for nursing school clinicals... And our facility says they must be covered up per our dress code, but I see tons of people, including supervisors that have them. I have a small one on my wrist, but it's mostly covered by my watch while I'm at work.

Is it okay for RN to ask recovery patients not to swear?
I, personally, rarely swear, so I would prefer it if my patients don't swear at me or use truly obscene language... But, I understand, also, that when people are in pain, they don't always think before they speak. So, unless they're just being a jerk about it, I let it go. If they're being a jerk... Well, I ask nicely for them to chill with it, but ultimately... I can't control what comes out of their mouth.

5/14 WILTW: Healthcare Gymnastics and Revolving Doors
Hmmm. What have I learned this week? I learned that I am no longer the "greenest" nurse on my unit and was able to fix multiple issues a newbie was having without second guessing myself or needing help myself ( ). I learned that just because you've been a nurse for ages, it doesn't necessarily mean you know more than your coworkers. Times change and if you didn't change with 'em, you might be wrong. I learned that I have qualified for enough financial aid that my FNP degree (which starts in August!) will be covered, even if I have to drastically cut my work hours. and lastly... I learned that even though I'm stressed and irritated and work on a unit undergoing INSANE amounts of change... I still love being a nurse! ...most of the time. LOL

Going Back at 40 years old...
I'm not quite 40... But I got my ADN at 37, my BSN at 38, and have been accepted to an MSN-FNP program that I will complete at age 40. You can do this!!!

Obese Nurses
This thread gave me the giggles. As a night shifter who just regained consciousness after a crazy night, I thank the lot of you. Now, I shall go oil my hair (free-flowing, of course) to get ready for tonight's festivities. [emoji106]ðŸ»

Samford FNP Fall-2016
The deposit was $750, which was listed in the admissions data on the application. I'm in the MSN-FNP track for Fall 2016. When I received my portal login, I could access what financial aid would be available to me, which included the max amount of loans I qualified for per my FAFSA. I have some connections through the hospital I work at for clinical sites... Which I hope work out. I've read that Samford will supply us with a list of potential preceptors should we need them. 🤗

Samford FNP Fall-2016
So, I just officially accepted and paid my *gulp* non-refundable deposit. I prayed about my decision and actually feel at peace with my choice to attend to Samford. Which of y'all will I meet there? :)

Samford FNP Fall-2016
I applied maybe a week before the deadline? I do t remember exactly. I do know that I submitted my video interview the day it was due, rather than early because it was my long week at work. Respond by May 13 (email), deposit is due May 15. Official admissions packets will be emailed June 25 and orientation is scheduled for August 23-25.
