  1. We work 185 days per year. We are on the same schedule as the teachers. We have professional days, but our nurse leader usually cannot get us any type of continuing ed. that would give us CEUs for these days! We are can go to one paid conference per year. We get 12 sick days and 3 personal days per year. These can all be rolled over as sick time from year to year. I have to say we have great benefits, but the pay is somewhat lacking!
  2. I have been a school; nurse for 8 years and I have always worn scrubs to work. Many of my co-workers wear street clothes with a lab coat. I'm thinking of switching- I wanted to take a poll of my fellow school nurses to ask you what you wear to work?

I too really miss working with moms and newborns. I have worked for the past 8 years as a school nurse at a large high school. The schedule is great (7a-2p) 185 days per year. The pay is not great, and I have 4 kids soon to be going to college! I am torn because this job has a pension and good health insurance available in retirement, but I would make quite a bit more money if I worked post-partum. I also don't like the liability involved in school nursing-the judgment calls are yours alone. If I stick with the school job, I would have to do private duty or community health to supplement my income, but I probably could retire at 62 with a pension and just work perdiem at that point. The problem with the post-partum job is that it is in a big city hospital and I would have to commute 34 miles each way. I am 47 years old and I don't know if I could do 12 hour shifts (which I would prefer as it is 1 less day I would have to commute). I worked post partum years ago and I absolutely loved it but I took the school job because it was more convenient for my family. I would appreciate any comments that would help me to make a decision!

I am a school nurse in Massachusetts also and we have standing MD orders for Tylenol, Ibuprofen, antibiotic ointment, Hydrocortizone ointment, Solarcaine, Betadine, sterile eyewash. We have a permission sheet that parents must sign for their children to receive these products. Also, we have standing MD orders to give Benadryl, epipens, and oxygen in an emergency. All these are supplied by the town.
