I'm in DFW. I think that the job market definitely fluctuates. During covid there was a lot of desperation but recently not so much.

I've had the same issue. My only thought is new grads are preferred for some reason - fresh, bright eyed, happy, not jaded, easy to train, and won't talk back. My job market is difficult too. I'm looking for job markets that are a bit easier to break into...what is back home? Have you gone to job fairs?

I'm in my late 40s and my current unit hires mostly 20-somethings - almost exclusively. Recently, most of the older nurses I used to work with and love have retired. This shift has caused a huge culture change. I have been thinking for a while to branch out of my specialty. But I always feel I'm being interviewed as a courtesy and not as a true candidate. I get the "good luck" at the end of the interview every time. Nursing is my second career so I have a BA/MS in another area. I sometimes think that might be intimidating and I should just take that part of my life off my resume? And then I think it's my age. I'm pretty solid with all my answers as I've had plenty of practice interviewing. But I know of several 20-somthing nurses that show up at career fairs and get hired on the spot. I'm curious if managers can give their insight into why they would be reluctant to hiring more mature candidates (it would be greatly appreciated and helpful to understand). Here are my thoughts as to why an older candidate would not be thought of as desirable: Older people are more expensive Older people are more resistant to change Older people are harder to train Older people are more moody Older people are less energetic Older people will disagree with management more Older people offer less longevity for the organization Older people will be less likely to pick up extra shifts Older people have developed a harden exterior from years of nursing Hiring managers: Is there any truth to these generalizations and, if so, how do I combat these preconceived notions and come out ahead? Hello, I've been trying to branch out of my specialty and enter ICU but the Dallas job market seems rather difficult. I spoke with a traveler who was new to the area and she said that DFW was the most difficult place she has ever tried to get a job. She said that it took her longer than ever to find work and thinks it is related to oversaturation. People from all over see DFW as a nice place to live and work and flock to this area. Does anyone know of resources to find a market that would be more favorable to the job seeker? I am in my late 40s and think I'm also battling ageism. The 20-something crowd seem to be getting all the jobs.

I've been reading an old thread from Fall 2014 applicants. Someone mentioned a reading list that is handed out at orientation and must be completed by the first day...wondering if someone can post that? Also, how does a student get selected for summer classes? A TCC nursing student graduated a semester early because she was selected for summer classes.

I applied. EXACT same GPA and score as you! LOL. 100 on math and 88 on reading/grammar. I thought the reading was a little tricky. I have a BA in English so I thought I would ace the reading/grammar section...guess not..

Hello! I'm at TCC also! I've just applied for Spring admission. I suggest buying a book of pretests. Work through those for two weeks before the test. You have TONS of ratios on the math portion...MUST know ratios! What I can tell you is that the reading section is a lot harder than any of the pretests I took. But if you know basic grammar...difference between their, there, they're...then you will be fine on the grammar section. Really practice math! Good Luck! Hope to see you at TR!
