Visitation in the NICU
At our facility we don't consider our parents "visitors!" Therefore they can be at the bedside 22 hrs a day if they choose. They must step out of our care rooms for an hour in the am and an hour in the pm for shift change. But even then they don't have to leave they can go to the family room or cafe. Other visitors can visit if the parents are present from 1-3 and 8-10.

I'm supposed to wear an "Ask me if I washed my hands!" button?!
I really think these idiots that dream up these things have been cooped up in an office way too long! A few years back our hosital system came up with a campain to showcase how caring and compassionate our staff was and they made up a button for us to wear that said, "You deserve to be treated this way!" Needless to say this didn't last long either.

please help!!!
Just a comment- in my state my sister in law (a stna) passes med in an adult group home for the mrdd after a training course. Also after an additional training session they can be "certified" to give g-tube meds and tube feedings. There are several group homes in our area and there would never be enough nurses to give 24 hour care. As scary as it sounds to me as an RN, I still know that they take excellent care of their patients and we are very lucky to have some good UAP's out there.

Interview Questions
A question that I had in several interviews when I graduated was a prioritizing question such as..You have just come out of report and you have a pt call out with chest pain, an unsteady confused pt crawling out of bed and a pt with a new blood transfusing complaining of SOB and extreme itching...what do you do? who do you see first and why? Good luck at your interview!! I am sure you will do great.

pre-employment screening
I'm just curious what other hospitals include in their pre-employment screening process. At my previous employer it was simply a drug test with a medical hx questionare. I went today for my screening for a new position at a different hospital and it included much more. PPD 2 step (even though I had one in the past year and provided paperwork saying this), blood draw (to determine immunity), UA, drug test, vision test, hearing test, finger prints (I will be working NICU) and complete physical (gown and all) by occupational health MD. I am just not used to this is this common in other facilities?

filter needles - policy
We all use filter needles, it's policy also. We have the twin sets and I have never seen these used for filtering. I agree it's not worth the possible risk to the patient. I really think if twinsets were safe our administation would get rid of filter needles, they are always trying to cut costs.

Day sleepers..........
I also use dark sheets to cover my window and it works great. What doesn't work though is the neigbors who decided to replace their vinyl siding last week and now have moved on to the roof. AHHH! How annoying!!
