You were not wrong. Sounds like the manager was trying to make herself look important and all knowing in front of her staff when all she actually succeeded in doing was making herself look incompetent. I would report the incident to your manager but do so in an email so that you have written confirmation that you reported it.

I understand your anxiety regarding working with new grads in the ICU however I personally hate the term baby nurses. All of us were once new grads just starting out and having to find our way. I have been a nurse for 16 years now and I still hate that term baby nurse. It is just condescending in my opinion. Like I said I do understand your anxiety about working with all new grads in the ICU. If you have an Unit Educator they should be able to help the new nurses and you feel more comfortable. Also make sure that you speak with management regarding your feelings about the new grads in the ICU all being on night shift. Make sure to do so in an e-mail so that you have proof that you raised the concern.

Children may not be able to fully understand what was going on with their father but in my personal opinion they have every right to see him regardless of his bleeding from every orifice and moaning in pain. As one of the other posters said more than likely they will not remember specifics about how he was all they will be able to remember when they are older is that they got to say goodbye.

EICU is awesome, well at least the one that I work with happens to be. It was a little strange to get used to the camera thing when you are in the patient's room. I love being able to hit the EICU button and have someone right there immediately.
