starting out, mother of 3
I started my pre-reqs in the fall of 2011 after having completed high school in 2005. I had a 5 yo, 4 yo (stepchildren of which my DH and I have full custody), and a 13 months old. I worked full time as well. During my sophomore year, my father finally passed away after a 6 year battle with cancer, and due to marital issues, I moved in with my disabled mother who lived over an hour away from my school. Following an amazing experience with my father's hospice care, I changed my major to nursing. My point, throughout all that, I had my priorities straight and found college easier than most younger students because I knew how important it was and that my effort was directly related to my grades. I maintained a 4.0 GPA until the semester my father passed because he passed away the Friday before finals week and I take full responsibility for the fact I did not study at all for those finals. Still, after my husband and I reconciled our differences, I moved back home, continued to go to school full time, work evenings full time, and still found time to study, clean, play with the kids, run errands, and relax all while maintaining a 3.8 GPA. If you are committed, you can do it. The experience will be as difficult as you let it be. I view it as a blessing and an opportunity because after the economy crashed in 2009 and I was laid off, I had nothing to offer my children... and now I do, or will. I think my attitude has helped my journey. Form good study habits, ask for more help around the house, and apply those mommy time management skills and you will succeed. Good luck and congratulations!

Starting new PCT job tomorrow...
I start orientation for my PCA job on the 25th and I was informed by the nurse manager who hired me that I have to get there 30 mins early (6:30 pm) for report, every shift, but I won't be on the clock until 7:00 pm. Although I'm eager to please, do well, and advance my clinical experience...I know this is wrong/illegal to require your employees to work off the clock. The truth is I would have probably done so anyways so I could be ready to go at shift change, but I don't like that it is mandatory. However, at this stage, beggars can't be choosers and I consider myself fortunate to have obtained the position. :/

Psych online or on campus?
I took psychology 101 on campus and developmental psychology online. I made A's in both. However, due to duplicity of ideas that are sometimes only altered in the most minute of ways between X's theory and Y's theory, I would recommend psyche 101 (or comparable) on campus. The professors can usually give memorable examples in a live lecture that sometimes won't translate to the recorded lecture. Developmental psyche, however, is completely doable online AFTER you've learned the theories and concepts from psychology 101. This is just my experience and my opinion. I've taken 1/3 of all of my pre-reqs in the online format due to employment and familial responsibilities so I am very accustomed to, and comfortable with, the learning format. You should consider how well you learn in online setting and measure how well you anticipate to understand the material before you decide. Best of luck to you!

Hand care
*sqaumous cell carcinoma And thank you Okami! I'll definitely give both a try!

Hand care
During the time period my father was diagnosed with sqamous cell carcinoma until his consequent death, I developed super hygiene skills to try to prevent compromising his weakened immune system and, in the latter hospice days, trying to prevent contamination. From the frequent hand cleaning and sanitizing I developed eczema on my palms that I still struggle with two years later. I will be beginning clinicals in the Spring and was wondering what hand lotions or creams or skin care methods you would recommend to stave off the excessive dryness associated with frequent hand cleaning? Thank you in advance!

Is it offensive?
First off, I'm not a NP - I'm not even a RN yet - but I felt like this was the best place to ask my question. I just recently found out the woman who typically treats my daughter at our pediatrician's office is an NP. I've never noticed her credentials advertised on her lab coat and because she is so fantastic with my daughter, kind, and so good with quelling a worried Mother's fears (lol), I suppose I never thought to learn the nature of her licensure. So, to my question, because I'm positive that I have called this woman "doctor" innumerable times, is it offensive? Are you offended when you're called doctor? Thanks in advance for responses!

University of Alabama Nursing Program?
I go to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and our nursing program is ranked number 21 in the nation by U.S. News! It's highly competitive, an exhilarating challenge, and the faculty is amazing. In pre-nursing, our anatomy lab gave us the unique privilege of working with human cadavers and that experience has been invaluable. There is a huge support network set up there for student nurses and an open communication program for pre-nursing majors to be mentored by current nursing students. The opportunity to get real answers about your concerns has been extremely helpful in making decisions in my personal life as well as my academic career. Tips for UAB- take all your sciences from UAB (or whichever university you should chose), and preferably all your pre-reqs. My school's feelings on this are because they know that if you were "trained" at UAB, you will be prepared for UAB's rigorous nursing program and won't end up dropping out after the 1st semester. Keep your GPA up by scheduling one science per semester so you aren't swamped with coursework. Get active in your community: volunteer, shadow nurses, and/or seek employment in the medical field. Lastly, do some honest soul searching and make sure that you're seeking a BSN for the right reasons. If it's truly your calling then working hard academically, giving your time to your community while testing the water about service in which type of population is most rewarding to you, and always seeking the best education and training will all come naturally. Good luck to you in all your future endeavors!

Who's taking summer courses?
I have Intro to Organic Chemisitry/Biochem and associated lab (on campus) and Statistics (online). I actually enjoy the summer semesters because I don't have so many courses to shuffle around! I feel like I am actually LEARNING and not just acquiring facts. I had to schedule my courses so that I had as little time on campus as possible, so I managed an all day on campus schedule on Tuesdays and an early morning lecture on Thursdays so my husband takes Tuesdays off and works a late shift on Thursdays and stays home with the kids so we don't have to pay for daycare. All I have left to take is Microbiology and Public speaking in the fall ( and at least 2 electives to stay full-time) and, hopefully, a letter of acceptance into nursing school. I think I'm just so excited about how close it is finally!
