Warm the patient's hand by holding it for a minute if they are cold. Then clean and get your sample. Watch for thick calluses. The side of the finger works nicely. Pinkies and thumbs are also rarely used and usually a sure thing.

I have a guaranteed job with my hospital when I graduate. A lot of hospitals will make you sign a contract to work there in exchange for tuition assistance. But this also means that I have a job. Our unit likes to hire new nurses from within the hospital. They already know the people and management knows the character of the employee.

In Indianapolis my base rate is $10.00. Another $1.25 after 2pm. Another $2 an hour on weekends. Extra pay for picking up shifts when needed - another $2.50 to $5.00 an hour extra.

We do catheters, blood, enemas and vitals. I had no experience and no CNA. I started nursing school. The hospital did all of my training.

Make friends with your nurses. Get your job done, offer to help, ask the nurses if they need help. Smile. Be friendly. Get to know your patients. Do a good job. Ask questions. People will help you. The nurses are happy to help you learn to so things right. If you are good at your job it makes their shift easier. They want to help you be good.

I started at Marian. I completed a couple of pre-reqs there. When I met with my advisor I was told that my first semester in the program would be 18 credit hours at $798 a credit hour. My first semester would cost $14,000, and financial aid would only cover $9000. They suggested private loans for the rest. Someone would have to cosign for me, and I would have had an unbelievable amount in loans. I work at a local hospital. I talked to nurses on my unit. Several are Marian grads. I was told it's a good school, but that the program is all-consuming and that they were struggling to pay loans with their nursing salaries. They said you could work or go to school. Or have kids and go to school but that doing all three would about be impossible. I switched to another school that my employer is giving scholarships for. I have to work. I have kids. I'll be in school longer. But I'll have less debt.
