  1. Today I floated to a floor I do not usually work on. When I approached the charge nurse at the nurses station to introduce myself, she was puffing on an electric cigarette. I found it really odd, but kind of let it slip my mind. Later in my shift, I had to approach her to give an update on my pt who was expected to be d/c and again, she was puffing on her E cig. Midway into our convo she says, oh don't mind me and laughed. She was very friendly and accommodating, but that just seems extremely inappropriate, no? Is it even legal? I don't know... I also noticed she had it charging in the USB outlet of the work computer. Again, strange... Has anyone seen this before? Now that I'm home and I'm thinking about it, I'm both shocked and literally LOLing.

I don't remember the circumstance, but the one and only time I've seen a coude cath used on a female was during my L&D rotation during nursing school.
  4. Float pool techs get paid more at my place of employment. However, maybe it's because I work for an organization that branches into 4 hospitals throughout the county, so they float not just from floor to floor but from hospital to hospital as well.
  5. That is quite the story; I feel bad for your classmate.
  6. Could not agree more!
  7. If you are only at risk, there is no evidence to include an as evidenced by...
  8. I work among two CNAs who are in their 40s/50s. According to them, they have been CNAs for 20+ years. I frequently hear them gossiping and talking down about certain nurses (especially new ADN grads). I've heard such comments along the lines of, "anyone can get a two year degree, I'm 20+ years older than her, I could do her job with one hand, etc." Basically, these two think that because they are older that they are wiser than some of us on the floor. I'm not a new grad, but I am a young nurse, younger than these two women. To me, their comments are insulting- but, nothing has ever been directed towards me/said to my face, so I try and ignore them. Has anyone ever experienced this before- older CNAs who think they know everything and are real ignorant about it? If so, have you done anything about it?
  9. Your state is one step ahead of mine. I wish this were the case. Like I said, I don't agree with it; it puts too much responsibility on the instructor. At times it seems like the students roam the unit like its a free for all.
  10. I have a hybrid group of 1st semester nursing students assigned to my unit for clinicals 2x per week. There are 16 students to 1 instructor. First off, that is way too many students assigned to 1 instructor to be responsible for; I feel bad for the guy. Then I read about situations like those listed above where there are students on the floor without the instructor and I just shake my head. Anyway, this particular instructor has actually implemented a rule where if there is a call bell going off, a student is not permitted to enter the room unless that is his/her assigned patient. Reason for this being that students in the past have been quick to run into a room with a call bell going off and unintentionally caused harm to the pt: giving water to a pt with an NG tube, assisting a pt to the restroom without using a gait belt and resulting in a fall, removing an abductor pillow from a fresh post op and resulting in the pts fresh hip to pop out of place... these situations are unfortunate and it's easy for someone to be quick and blame the student but again they are 1st semester students who only get 1 classroom day per week and the ratio of students to instructors is 16:1.
  11. Lillian- I holistically agree! Was a CNA for three years before started school and worked during the program as well.
  12. Karen- very helpful info. Thanks!!!
  13. Convention... For example, the AMSN convention
  14. I have a PRN job and am mandated to sign up for a minimum of (6)12 hour shifts in a 6 week period. I almost always work those 6 shifts. I rarely get called off.
  15. Hello all- I'm brand new to the site- not 100% sure if this is the correct category to post my topic in so my apologies in advance. Any fellow nurses had the pleasure of attending a convention? What have you learned? Just curious... I have never been to one but am very interested to know what goes on at a nursing convention.
