Pa None Smoking!
I'm not sure if Oklahoma has banned smoking in public places, or not. But, in Tulsa it is no longer allowed in bars, eateries, etc. AND....in November all the local hospitals will be smoke free. There will be, absolutely, NO smoking on the hospital grounds, not even in the vehicles. For anybody.

~Summer School~ Yea!
And you'll also be one step closer to applying to the nursing program! :balloons:

~Summer School~ Yea!
Sassy, how long is your summer semester? Our's is 6 weeks. Maybe that's where the difference lies? We also have to take a semester long Nurse Aid course to get into the nursing program. I took the PCT program this past semester and will be working as an ER Tech, starting next week. I'm applying to the nursing program this fall. I think it will benefit us to have this experience when we start clinicals. Don't you? What Nurse Aid class will you be taking? And will you be certified after the class is over?
-
~Summer School~ Yea!
Wow that's a lot of classes! At the school I attend, 2 classes during the summer is considered full time. To take any more, than two, we have to get special permission. I wish I could take more to get all of this over with but I can only handle so much. haha!

~Summer School~ Yea!
So, who's joining me? LOL! I'll be taking two classes this summer (and working full time) ~Biology for Majors ~History What are you taking?

Phlebotomist Salary Tulsa
I was offered a position with the plebotomy dept at Hillcrest. They said starting out I would make $8.90 / hr. I turned it down, as I had a better offer elsewhere.

Oklahoma Nursing Programs?
Ah! Now I see the confusion! You're comparing Platt's LPN program against TCC's RN (ASN) program. Platt only gained their NLN accreditation, this year, for their RN program, here in Tulsa. Which the Platt pass rate is actually lower than TCC's. I couldn't figure out where you got your numbers. TCC does not have an LPN program so the only pass rates that are equivalent are the RN programs.

Oklahoma Nursing Programs?
No I'm doing my prereqs at TCC. This fall I will be applying to all the nursing depts (RSU, TCC, Langston, OU - Tulsa) and make a decision from there.
-
Platt?
They've only been able to attain the NLN accreditation for this past year so there's no real history to base the pass rate off of except one class. I, personally, wouldn't want to put my future and $16,000 in their hands and just pray that they don't lose the accreditation that took them to long to get. That's just my thinking. I would rather go somewhere else that is proven. There are many options in the area. That just wouldn't be one that I'd choose. It may work great for you. If you decide to go that route I'd be interested in how it goes for you. Good luck in what ever you decided to do! :)

Oklahoma Nursing Programs?
I meant 12,000. OOps!! LOL!!! It's even more expensive than I heard! That's outrageous...
-
Oklahoma Nursing Programs?
Everybody that I know, that has applied, has been accepted. They go on the point system and they required a 2.5 or higher.

Oklahoma Nursing Programs?
When I aquired about Platt I was told that the tuition is 120,000 for the LPN course!!! And it's only like 4000-6000 at Tulsa Tech. This is also only the 1st year they were able to get NLN accredited. If you go that route just get all the pertanent info you can.
-
Platt?
I've heard nothing but bad things about them. Please check into it thoroughly before deciding to go that route.

Oklahoma Nursing Programs?
TCC no longer requires math courses to be accepted into the nursing program. They stopped requiring in the middle of last semester while I was taking algebra. UGH! I have always been awful in math and was terrified to take any classes but I managed an A in algebra! I asked for the best instructor when I registered and he explained everything to where I actually learned a thing or two. I agree with you about the admissions being rude over the phone. The only thing I can say about that is they are not that way in person. Or so I haven't had a problem so far. I'm not sure where you are getting your information about TCC being hard to get into. They actually accept more students into the nursing program than any other school in the area. The only schools that accepts more are in OKC. I just wanted you give you another side of the story so you can make a better decision for yourself. Have you checked into Langston? I know ORU & TU are the more expensive colleges in the area. I thought about going the LPN way and taking the bridge as well but you are not actually saving any time by doing so. You still have to take all the prereqs but the nursing depts give credit for being an LPN instead of starting the nursing core classes with the first year, you take a bridge class and then get married into the 2nd year of the nursing classes. So it's takes the same amount of time to get there. You saved a year but it took a year to get your LPN so it's basically a wash. I'm not sure about LPNs in the clinical setting but I do know they are used in the hospitals for sure. Sorry, wish I could help you more there!

Oklahoma Nursing Programs?
OU - Tulsa has a LPN to BSN bridge. http://nursing.ouhsc.edu/Prospective_Students/Program_Information/LPN_BSNProgram.htm And TCC has an LPN to RN (ASN) bridge. Not sure of your reasons for not wanting to go there but they are one of the less expensive nursing schools in the area. They also have one of the highest NCLEX pass rates in the state. Hope this helps! :)

Interviewing for an ER Tech job & have questions
I thought of that and am lucky that I can honestly tell them that my husband is a stay at home dad so it should not be an issue. Any suggestions on questions I may ask them? I am curious as to whether or not techs can participate in the PALS and ACLS classes. I do plan on enquiring about that....anything else?

Interviewing for an ER Tech job & have questions
Hello all! :monkeydance: I've been reading through many of the old threads in this section of the forum but I was wondering if I could get some feedback about my situation. The nursing dept at my school requires that applicants take the CNA or PCT course before applying so I chose the PCT class and am doing well and due to finish by May 5th. I've decided to work as a PCT FT this summer and stay on PT in the fall to gain experience. I have an interview for an ER Tech position, in a level 1 trauma center, next wk. I want to be an ER nurse after I get out of school so I figured this would be a good start for me. Okay...I obsessively want this job!! LOL!! There are several students in my class that have stated they want to work in the ER as a tech as well. Here's my problem: I'm an older student with no choice but to work. 3 kids and disabled husband. The other students, interested in this position, are the beautiful, young, blonde and tan girls that are easily noticed and remembered. I want to stand out and make a good impression for my interview. I went out and bought a nice outfit for the interview and know to keep make-up, jewelry, perfume and nails to a minimum and professional. Greet and end with a smile and handshake and follow with a thank you note. I think what I need to feel secure going into the interview are possible questions that I will be asked for the tech position not an RN and questions I may ask specifically for this position as well. I figured since many of you work with ER techs you may have some idea of what I may be asked. Thank you in advance~

Where to live around Tulsa?
Hi, CAMeadors I live in Bartlesville: http://www.bartlesville.com/visitors/ ...which is directly north of Tulsa on 75. I attend TCC, in Tulsa, as a Nursing Applicant. It takes me 35-40 minutes to get to school but is worth it to me to live in B'ville. It's a smaller community of 30,000 but we have all the extras...restaurant chains...mall (including Dillards, Gap, Bath & Body Works)...country clubs...antique shops...civic ballet...choral society...symphony orchestra, museums etc. The town is owned by Wal-Mart & Phillips 66 so all the executives made sure the amenities were there. Yet, the down home Mayberry life exists. We also benefit from having one of the best public school districts in Oklahoma. I just wanted to give you another option~ kaytekayte, would you mind telling me which school, in Kansas, you're taking the online classes through? It sounds like an excellent option! Thanks :)

How do you deal with anti-OB people?
This is my experience too. Having had 3 children and in 3 different states (California, Texas and Oklahoma) I was encouraged to BF at EVERY one of the hospitals. I had a heck of a time trying with my first and after 4 wks of not producing I turned to bottle feeding. Same with my second child, after a couple of wks. When I was in the hospital w/ my third I didn't even try because I wanted to enjoy my daughter and not deal with the stress and guilt of not being able to feed my child. I was encouraged to try (and was told of the benefits etc) but I told them I would rather bottle feed. It is NOBODY'S choice except mine If I choose to breast or bottle feed! I was never pressured either way at any of the hospitals and am very glad of that too. If I had come across anybody telling me what a bad mother I was for not breast feeding my third child I would have simply gone Rambo on them. I had 2 children naturally and my third w/ an epidural. My 3rd child took the longest to deliver because I was just not able to push. If I had to do it again I would deliver my 3rd naturally as well. But, that is my choice and I was never pressured in any direction with any of my births. The only surprise I encountered was the episiotomy with my 1st. I wish the doctor would have told me what he was doing instead of just doing that. That was by far the most painful thing I endured during childbirth.

Happy New Year! and other rambelings...
I just wanted to echo my wishes for a Happy New Year to all my fellow prenursing and nursing students. My this year bring excellent grades to us all

For all those applying with deadline of Jan 15th
I worry about this too. My family depends on me getting through school and becoming a nurse. So anytime I feel like being lazy I just tell myself there is no room for slacking off. Take one day out of the week for yourself. That was essential for me getting through last semester. Our brains need down time :chuckle Good luck!

What a day!!!
Wow, congrats!! :balloons: ...I think that would have caused me to have an anxiety attack

Getting the runaround...
I applied to a tech school before enrolling at my local CC. (Was going to take the LPN class then do the bridge at the CC) The tech school NEVER called me back, even after I had paid to take the entrance exam. I never got a call about an appoint to take the test and nobody ever returned my calls requesting information. I took it as a sign that this wasn't the place for me and moved on to the community college I attend now. Maybe something better is menat for your future too :)
