OMG, is it only the second day of nursing school????
First semester of nursing school was hard for me. The shock factor will go away, not saying nursing school gets any easier because it doesn't. But it's not as surprising and scary as each semester goes on...I'm finally in my last semester of classes and it has gotten harder and harder but I've gotten more adjusted to the tougher material and more clinicals

PCA position in nursing school
Hi everyone! I am starting my S1 (3/4) semester of my BSN program in August, and I'm applying for jobs to work as a PCA and get some experience. I've been a CNA before but never had the chance to work as one because of full time classes. I go to school in the Texas Medical Center and plan on finding an RN job here after graduation. A few questions for applying as a PCA/student nurse 1) should I only be applying to jobs in the hospital system I want to work in? For example if I wanted to work at Texas Children's hospital as an RN should I hold out for a pca position at a Texas children's hospital system job right now as a PCA or 2) would it be more beneficial for me to hold out for a job in women's services (I want to do L&D) at any hospital for the time being, to better my chances of getting a grad job in women's services? Which do you think would be my best option? Thanks

Do you "tell" Facebook where you work?
I really like this thread. I'm currently a nursing student, graduating in May. I just changed my Facebook to my first and middle name, and have absolutely no pictures of drinking or partying on my Facebook. Recently I looked over my settings to make sure I was on private. Facebook used to just have the option of "private" but I had to edit a few things on my settings to feel a little more secure. Somehow I still don't feel like it's private. As a student preparing for professional life what would you guys suggest? Keep your fb "clean", no drinking/partying, work related statuses etc and putting your place of employment there, or just not putting it at all?

Any Advice for New Nursing Students?
It will be the toughest schooling you have ever gone through or will go through. I came from a family of nurses. Basically was born wanting to be a nurse, took classes in high school, worked as a CNA, and I can tell you I STILL was not prepared for what was about to hit me in nursing school. It's a culture shock honestly. I do not sleep more than 6 hours a night ever (my program is accelerated so we have heavier schedules), and I eat breathe and live nursing all day and night. The stress levels will be through the roof, nursing questions literally mess with your mind, and you will no doubt fail a few tests in nursing school. Even as a straight A student. But I can tell you that EVERY SINGLE SECOND is worth it. In less than a year I'll be taking my NCLEX and become an RN like I've always dreamed about. The journey is hard and EXHAUSTING. (You have not experienced exhaustion until you get to nursing school). But taking care of patients is the most humbling and sweetest experience. I walk into clinicals (very tired and stressed albeit) but NEVER have a day go by where a patient does not make an impact on me. We are learning to take care of people holistically--you have their lives in your hands. And to be able to be there to resuscitate, be there while they are in labor, or just have a therapeutic conversation with them, it makes every second of studying for these HORRIBLE, scary tests all worth it knowing one day a patients life will be in my hands and I'll know how to respond because of the knowledge and training I'm getting right now in nursing school. It will be tough but you can do it! It's been done, it's doable, just the hardest thing you will probably have yet to do.

Just a quick tip: UT housing is the cheapest around the med center but a LOT of crime happens there! If you plan on living within 5 miles of the med center it's going to be expensive

UT Houston (Fall 2014 applicants)
Hi everybody I know it's super stressful applying but I hate to say there is no rhyme or reason to evals being sent it. Don't panic if you don't get one! I promise they have no thought process or order to this, it's like random. I received like 4, and then another after I had already started at the school. Personally I think their computer systems receive stuff and it spits letters out randomly. If you want to make sure you got everything turned in and all your classes have been transferred (and I would double check all of them); call the office. If they don't answer, call again. Tell them you want to make sure all of your info got to them, double check your classes, application, etc. tell them you haven't received an eval yet. I called about classes and 2 days later I received an email. Just call them but don't panic, some people don't get evals!

UTHSC Summer 2015 Application
@TX2015 The instructors are great. You will quickly find that they are all very supportive and do their best to help you in every way! you will definitely like some profs teaching styles more than others (****** in patho is very monotonous and boring....but it's a challenging class so you have to go!). But everyone at UTHSC wants to see you succeed. I feel like the admissions process was TEN TIMES more competitive than being enrolled at the school. Everyone on these thread were comparing GPAs and HESIs and I can promise you guys that you'll never figure out what exactly they are looking for. We took guesses and tried to figure it out but some will get in with 3.5s and some with 4.0s won't, they look at so many different things. Surprises in the first semester...haha I'm going to be honest and say I was absolutely unprepared and blown away by the amount of work, the amount of info, the short amount of time to learn everything, how little i sleep, exactly how much time i would devote to school daily and how much friend and family time i would give up.....ALL overwhelming. It's a lifestyle change. You aren't just a college student, you aren't just getting a measly Bachelor's degree, you aren't just taking alot of hours, you are a NURSING STUDENT. I didn't (and none of my classmates) realized what that meant. Lots of tears and stress and breakdowns the first semester that you just aren't prepared for! But talking to upperclassmen, they ALL went through the same thing as well, so it's just a rough first semester and honestly a rough year and a half of stress. It's shocking, but it's doable! I moved to Houston for school in JAnuary and it was good for me because all of my friends and family live 4 hours away so they aren't a constant distraction. You give up your life and your sanity and everything in between to get through! My class is not competitive, we are all just trying to pass everything, which is alot harder than just passing prereqs! Expect to be shaken up and tested to the limit, but YOU CAN DO IT. If i can, you can. We all go through it, and it is so rewarding. Getting to go to clinicals and actually put together all of what you're studying and take care of patients is the most rewarding feeling! Good luck to you guys in this process, don't stress now. That comes later...but keep the goal in mind! If yall have other questions let me know!

UTHSC Summer 2015 Application
Hi all. Im a J1 at UTHSC this semester. Yall are so quick to get on here and make a thread which can be really good or not so good! Starting early builds stress so keep yall's conversations light, informative, and supportive. Other threads i've been apart of are depressing because some people got in, some didn't, and feelings got hurt. So just a tip---keep it light! Also since it's so early in the game I have a few suggestions for you guys. Being in my first semester here I'm in pathophys, pharm, health assessment, and care 1. We actually have a HUGE test in patho today everyone is stressing about. We've been hearing from upperclassman how terrible this test is going to so there's been a lot of discussion. For me personally I came from UTA and took both my A&Ps there. I was very challenged being at a university and taking sciences there, and i just finished A&P 2 this past fall so most of it is very fresh. I believe both of these things have so far helped me immensely with patho. Not many people did well on the first patho test, I made a high B. I truly feel like it's because of those two factors. If i could give any advice (and take it with a grain of salt) take your sciences (especially A&Ps) at a university and take them right before you are expecting to start nursing school. Patho is very difficult and it requires you to know the anatomy and physiology perfectly before even beginning to understand the pathology of the diseases. So since you have time I'd suggest doing that, it's very helpful! Lots of my classmates that I've talked to feel like they've been cheated if they took A&P even two years ago because they feel like they've completely forgotten all of it! Just a suggestion! good luck to you guys in the application process, let me know if you have any questions!
