We have a NAN on postpartum. Its the newborn admission Nurse. They go to the delivery shortly after the baby is born once called. They admit the baby in the labor and delivery room. This involves assessment, meds, weights, length, growth chart and help with feeding. Some are OR trained and attend c-sections in which they assign the apgars as well and are in right before delivery occurs. Moms are not separated from babies unless the baby goes to nicu or once on the floor the mother requests baby be in the nursery or for circumcions. We no longer have a nursery nurse. The nurse of the couplet is responsible for all lab work and testing for baby. The Nan does not take an assignment on the floor. She just admits the babies in ldr. On daylight their is an OR NAN and a regular LDR NAN.

depends on the doc usually bedrest or oob with assist clears. but some patients have fussed enough that docs have ordered a regular diet no fluid restrictions generally levels arent drawn serially.

I'm a long term night shift nurse on mother baby. It can be difficult at times. I have to make sure i nap during the day on the nights i work. Yes the day after i work im useless but sleep fixes that. i sleep until 1pm then make myself stay up so i can get back to a normal schedule. i also work my nighta together. i do 2 nights 1 off then my last night. 3 nights together are rough on me and i avoid them when i can. if you are passionate about l&d i would see if you are able to do it.

c-section moms or higher accuity moms q4hrs. 8p-12a-4am. babies under 24hrs old or who are higher accuity are also q 4hrs. under 24 hrs lady partsl deliveries 12am.

We instruct are pp to use them. I have even set up some of them for pts to use. So yes they are still used

This was a big concern for us as well. We complained enough where they stopped doing it. but with that med surg nurses arent allowed to float to help our unit either. when they were there they only took care of mothers as well. I would as a whole voice your concerns repeatedly. They will either stop doing it or offer the proper training.

Yes there was definitely tension at my hospital. They have since started making new hires cross train or shadow. We have also come to more of an understanding with each department. As a pp nurse I understand that the l&d nurses have to get back to a laboring patient and need to bring patients up asap. They give us a courtesy call checking when they can bring a patient up or give us a heads up about issues a patient may be having. Which is great now. We are communicatino better. They realize we don't just sling colaces and it is actually better patient care to medicate a mom for pain before transfer if she needs medicated. I think it comes down to doing things that brings understanding to each department and at the end of the day it's about the patients having the best care

Yes my experience seems to be working against me. Im trying to get into labor and delivery from mother baby nursing and keep being turned down because i dont have labor delivery experience. The one nurse recruiter said i need labor and delivery experience to even be considered and gave no feedback to how I do that if she wont even forward my info over. Also attempted to get in Nicu and was turned down. Decided to apply for and ICU job to gain experience to see if i can transition from that to NICU and nope. I think the one nurse recruiter currently hates me so i took a break from applying at that hospital system. I have two jobs im waiting to hear back from. The one I dont think i got because again lack of labor and delivery experience. But I did tell the manager I am eager and willing to learn. Sigh. I decided to branch out to other specialties and was turned down. It's becoming quite frustrating and im thinking about quitting nursing all together.

No I didn't get chosen for the step down unit. Currently im still job hunting. Not sure where im going to land. The good thing is I decided to go back to school for my bsn.

Hello everyone. Ive been a nurse for nearly 10 yrs. 2 yrs were in medical cardiology. The other on a postpartum unit. I left the postpartum unit because of burn out and patient ratios. I transferred to a telemetry /observation unit at a newer hospital and im completely unhappy. I put in a general application at a different hospital and have an interview Friday for a step down unit. So we shall see how it goes. I think it may be what I need at this time.
