  1. good ideas, thank you!!
  2. do you have any suggestions where I could volunteer or intern to keep brushing up on my skills such as IVS and assessments. The hospitals I contacted said that they couldn't let me do anything hands on if I volunteered, that for clinical experience and skill schools have to have contracts with hospitals.
  3. I would love to volunteer there. I am going to look into that. Thanks!
  4. Thank you for your help. I will continue with your suggestions. In the meantime, do you have any suggestions where I could volunteer or intern to keep brushing up on my skills such as IVS and assessments. The hospitals I contacted said that they couldn't let me do anything hands on if I volunteered, that for clinical experience and skill schools have to have contracts with hospitals.
  5. Thank you for your suggestions! I have been researching both of those.
  6. Ms. Tammy, Thank you so much for the encouraging words. I am a new-grad with zero medical experience. I loved my clinical rotations at the Veterans Affairs hospital and I was aiming to get a job with them. But it has been impossible to get anyone to notice me. I have applied for everything that I find. nursing homes, rehab centers, clinics, health departments, correctional facilities, mental health facilities, hospitals. No luck yet but I will keep trying. I can let my RN license go to waste. Thanks again!
  7. This helps a lot. I kept searching for information on the files and on the actual job posting and it did not specify. hank you so much for clarifying this. @twinmommy+2
  8. when applying it asks for all of these forms, but when I find them online it appears they are just for veterans. Do I still have to submit these even though they do not apply to me? These are: SF-50 DD-214 SF-15 OF-306
  9. I really appreciate your response back, very detailed! I need you as a life coach. You bring up very good points. I am going to take a different approach to job hunting. I am so glad you responded. Thanks again.
  10. any suggestions?
  11. Thank you!! :) both for your response. Do you know if VA's hire new grads. I have tried applying everywhere and contacting HR and tracking down email contacts through linkdin and government websites. Where would you suggest I might have most luck getting a first RN job?
  12. NEW GRAD REGISTERED NURSE LOOKING FOR MY FIRST JOB HELP!! I live in Nashville but I am willing to drive a hour if I have to. Any suggestions? I have applied for over 500 jobs: gov jobs, Va jobs, dialysis clinics, rehab centers, medical offices, Vandy, saint Thomas, MTMC, UMC, Stone Crest, Skyline, nursing homes NO interviews or calls back, I have emailed, called and showed up in person. All of the places are telling me they need at least 6 months experience. Help!
  13. How to get a job at Veterans Affairs. Do you work at Veterans Affairs? How did you find the job? How did you get that first interview? Any advice for someone trying to get in? I am convinced that 99% of the jobs that are advertised are filled from within. I have tried for 6 months on a variety of fronts and most of the time, they either never respond or they find some minute red tape reason for accepting the application.
  14. I took it this morning and I got this pop up. “Our records indicate that you have recently scheduled this exam. Another registration cannot be made at this time.” Does this mean I passed, because it does not say Please contact the board like most of the other people have posted in the past. ????
  15. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply back with the tips! This really helped me out a lot. :) Many congrats to you, RN

  20. Congratulations!!! woohoo! Wish you all the best on your future endeavors. :) What resources did you use for infection control? just the hurst 5th day material?
  21. Basically, you either have to"Teach" or you are the one being "Educated". So remember to simply apply what you know about teaching-learning principles, like: assess what the client knows already before teaching, return demonstration is the best way to confirm that the learner has understood and can apply what has just been taught, and modify teaching plans in consideration of any learner disabilities. Another principle you have to apply is prioritization. When you have a long list of tasks that needs to be taught, which is the most important to teach. For example, if you have to teach a post-operative client about the numerous follow-up care needed after discharge, remember to prioritize infection control principles (aseptic technique when changing dressings, recognizing S&S of infection).
  22. A nurse is teaching staff about some sort of disease/process etc. The nurse would be sure to include which of the following instructions during the conference/meeting. It would give you several statements about the process and you would have to decide which one to teach and which one didn't apply or wasn't relevant. All of the statements seemed right to me because, honestly, I had never heard of the disease or whatever it was beforehand. That's why I had to guess. Some times all of them were right I suppose, but they wanted you to decide which one would you definitely stress in the meeting about this medical procedure/disease etc. I guess they could be considered priority. The obvious priority questions were something like "You are the nurse on a telemetry unit. You have just received report on the four following patients. Which patient would you see initially? The options would be something like 1) a CHF patient complaining of constipation for 3 days 2) a patient with chest pain who was there for MI three days prior 3) a patient complaining of abdominal pain scaled 3/10, 4) a patient who complained of dizziness after a dose of nitroglycerin. Either two of the options were obviously wrong or they all looked completely right. THIS is why I think these type of questions are hard for me because the answer wasn't obvious. On the conference questions you either knOw which answer applied to what was being taught. I could usually narrow them down to two just because some of the answers would include words like ONLY, or ALWAYS. If they did I eliminated those options because there is rarely a case where you would always do something. For example: The nurse is holding an inservice about the treatment of heart failure with digoxin. Which of the following are most important to include... 1) Verapamil can increase the serum levels of digoxin (TRUE) 2) Digoxin is contraindicated in patients with second or third degree atrioventricular block (TRUE) 3) When administering digoxin, take the apical pulse for 30 seconds and hold the dose if pulse is less than 60bpm (FALSE) 4) Pediatric therapeutic levels are typically 0.5 to 0.9 ng/dl (FALSE) 5) Beta blockers can increase the serum levels of digoxin (TRUE)
  23. Congratulations! stories like this inpire me. I am so happy for you. Thank your for sharing your story. Wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
  24. Take your previous failure and put them in a lockbox, lock it, and hide the key. Take this week to relax and grieve. Once you get your test results look at the areas your weak in and focus on those. You had 206 questions so this means you wear near to passing, you must have known something for the computer to continue on and give you more questions. Get a calendar and a review book and make yourself a schedule to prepare for this. Look at it as a test, nothing more, nothing less. If you have the money to spend on a review course, then sign up for one to jump start yourself. Otherwise, submit your application and set a date one or two months out and get to it. Start with the first chapter in the review book. Once you map out a plan and start working your plan, you will feel better about this. Remember: NCLEX is not just teaching content because it is nearly impossible to learn everything. It literally is. NCLEX wants to see if you have the ability to think as a nurse which is delegate, prioritize, and critical thinking skills. It is not about how many questions you practice on, but really if you understood why you got the question incorrect. For every question you got wrong, ask yourself why you chose that answer and what clues in the questions could have lead you to the correct answer. Thats was how I approach every incorrect practice question. I only do about 100 question a day because I spend a lot of time looking through my resources. Be able to look at the NCLEX questions and literally break it down into fragments, and spot the hints. I hope this helps in some ways. Remember, NCLEX is hype way too much and that is what psychs people out. Think of it as just another nursing exam but with just a bit more different than just a content-filled exam. Read through threads here, there is a ton of tips on study plans and resources. In the top right corner you can enter into the search box keywords to go by. Don't give up, you can do this. Good luck!
