  1. Thanks nursej22 and monz1987. Sounds like important work given the consequences of untreated TB! Do you mind sharing how you got these jobs? Is it through local county health office?
  2. I would love to learn more about what a day on the job as a PH Nurse is like! Would you mind sharing in the thread or private messaging if preferable?
  3. What's a day-in-the-life of WFH like? Any insight into any role/job would be very much appreciated! I am trying to transition from critical care after eight years of high stress, high intensity nursing. Thanks!
  4. Does anyone know how to transition from ICU/ED bedside nursing to a lower stress, more flexible work-from-home (WFH) position? What is it like to do chart review, utilization management, and other WFH jobs? Any more insight into working from home would be very much appreciated!
  5. Old thread but if anyone has updates on current conditions with the Navy Reserves: - Likelihood of landing chosen base location or at least w/in the same state? (Washington has a quite few bases!) - Are there critical care RN openings currently in reserves? Flight vs Hospital positions? Waiting to hear back from health professions recruiter. Noticed I actually posted in this thread 5 years ago - still interested in doing this!
  6. Thanks so much for weighing in Ned. I had previously signed an arbitration agreement so I'm trying to contact lawyers who could help but it's been difficult to find one. Additionally I think my travel company will want me to sign a new contract with the reduced pay rate prior to starting. So it sounds like I would have a tough time and it doesn't sound worth it.
  7. Signed contract, booked housing, and then come to find out today that my contract pay will be reduced 50% per the hospital! My start date is in two weeks - can they do this? Do I have any legal grounds to claim my agreed upon pay rate? Please help. Feel free to ask for any additional info that’s relevant.
  8. So far, I'm hearing mostly positive things about Aya. If anyone has other suggestions, let me know!
  9. I left a place that I loved to become a traveler because - Excited about exploring a new area and growth as a human being - Single, no wife, no kids - Only made $27/hr - Wanted to be closer to family/friends Everyone travels for their own reasons. The extra money is nice, but there are always unexpected costs. However, the overall experience can be invaluable - you'll never know what you'll find until you try.
  10. Heart is set on finding an assignment in the PNW this fall! Had no luck this summer, but this time around I'm hoping to find something. Which agencies have assignments in WA and OR? Did you like working for them? Which WA/OR hospitals hire in the ICU/critical care? If so, how was your experience there (pay, culture, etc)? Where exactly were you, and about how much did housing cost? Huge thanks in advance!
  11. Pixie, your deployment thread was eye-opening! Thank you so much for posting that. I am thinking of joining. Strong military tradition in my family. I sought service with healthcare, as an EMT then ICU RN, and am thinking more and more of military nursing. I am currently a travel RN, and really enjoy it, so Reserves may be the best fit for me. Did you transition to Reserves from AD? So far, the Navy sounded the most flexible - the recruiter promised I could drill at my own pace, and wouldn't even have to necessarily drill with my home unit. I am not sure how accurate this is, practically speaking. The Air Force recruiter made flight nursing sound like a real possibility, but it sounds very competitive based on the posts I've seen on this website. The Army recruiter really didn't have much insight at all, and I feel somewhat uninformed about this branch. Anyway, my main hold ups are not knowing what to expect, and my love of travel nursing!
  12. To those RNs serving in uniform, I have scoured these forms, and the internet at large, and found very few first-hand-experience posts. Would any of you be kind enough to run through what a-day-in-the-life is like as a military nurse? Also, I'd appreciate a little backstory - why you joined, what you were looking for, what your civilian background was, etc! Thank you so much!
  13. What the difference between the active reserves and inactive reserves?
  14. I am fortunate to have the choice of starting as a new grad either in the ICU or a Step-down unit at separate hospitals. Some background on each position: ICU position - Community-size hospital in a major city - Mixed ICU/Step-down unit, with 8 and 7 beds respectively - Usually only 3-4 RNs working on a given shift (depending on census) - No brain bleeds or STEMI. Only ischemic strokes and NSTEMI. No IR at this hospital - 6 months of training including didactic/precepting throughout (staggered so more classroom at the beginning, then mostly precepting by the end). 3 preceptors total and I'll be on the night shift. Cardiac Step-down position - Large academic hospital; 12 bed unit - Patients having undergone IR, electrophysiology, and cardiac-thoracic surgery. Require cardiac drips, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical circulatory assist devices, heart transplantation - 1 year residency program with at least 24 weeks of precepting I have a great problem here. Very fortunate to have this choice. But I'm completely torn. Ultimately, I want to be critical care nurse without a doubt. Just unsure which place would be the best place to start as a new grad. About me: - around 2 years healthcare experience as an EMT, ED Transporter, and Patient Sitter. - 3.92 nursing school GPA - willing to work as a hard as necessary to succeed To all of you seasoned ICU nurses out there, please share your thoughts. Thank you!
  15. I know I'm a little late, but I'll be interviewing/shadowing next week for 8E - Neuro ICU. It's my first in-person interview and of course, I'm pretty excited/nervous. Also, I'm from out of state (west coast). While I've done some research, I'd be SUPER grateful if anyone could offer their thoughts about: - What's expected during the job shadow? - There's nothing mentioned about a 2 year commitment. Does Duke usually require that new grads sign a contract? - What is it like moving from a fairly liberal/progressive area of the west coast to NC as a young(ish) male nurse? - Hows the local nightlife/music scene? - Is there much hiking/camping/mtn biking around the triangle and closer than the Appalachians? Humongous thanks!
